New builder from Gladstone Qld

I went to the event last weekend in Gladstone. I had introduced myself a week earlier to Don and Harley, while they were setting up the arena for the weekend. I took my grandson to the event, and he is hooked, well that's what I am telling the minister of war and finance.

Luckily, I already have the makings of a bot, being an old push drum mower. Hopefully, I can get something built prior to the next event up this way. Unfortunately, my job as a train driver sees me work really shitty shifts, which doesn't always see me having the weekends off. But hopefully things will line up.

So, some questions coming up in the tech section from me.

Cheers

David

This is what I am wanting to do. Give me a bit of slack, its my first build. I am sure you all will see problems, but that's how I am going to learn. This is what I am working with. Originally, the shaft on the left is the drive for the mower blade. The centre is obviously the wheel axle. A gear inside the wheel spins a gear on the blade shaft, so forward motion of the mower produces spinning of the blade. I want to reverse the process.

Now replace the 2 gears in the picture with bike sprockets and a chain between them. Drive motor behind the plate. Then the drive motor for forward and reverse motion of the bot up the top, with one of those gears, Yes I realise they are nylon so will probably strip out, fitted to it to engage to the gear inside the wheel, you can see it inside the wheel to the right. Simple small bearings on bolts top and bottom at the blade end of the upright plate will act as wheels to keep the blade just off the ground. Plan is it can run upside down when flipped.

12 V cordless drills at Kmart, $22 each, thank you very much. Also, whilst I still want to try my idea with the drive chain, I am now on the lookout for a stuffed belt sander, preferably older model Makita. 2 small pulleys and a V belt in them for a driveline.

Sounds complicated but cool- i recommend getting a drill drivetrain with some bunnings redwheels and some tz85 esc's first- that way you get something moving that is reliable - also you need spares for everything because you will get stuff bent out if shape at each event💥 Also whats the grip like on those lawnmower wheels? You may need to srew some push bike treds onto it otherwise⚙

grip on the wheels will be useless as is. They will be armoured first, then the bike tyre for grip.

Yep, fully conscious of the 13.6 kg weight limit. I am hoping that I can get away with the build being as light as possible in itself, so the rest of the weight can go to armour. Its another reason for not going for a physically large bot. Basically, I hope, the armour, probably 2mm or upwards sheet steel, although I would love to look at titanium, can perform a dual purpose, both protect, and reinforce, the chassis itself.

Interesting tear down of the first Kmart drill. Little balls everywhere. Some creative adaptation going to be required. I have to dismantle the chuck to see if anything in there is useable.

If your looking at Titanium, the cost would be much better put towards a more reliable drive system such as some of the Banebots planetary gearboxes.

What you want to do is drive some grub screws down the holes that the ball bearings came out of to lock the clutch. I trust you found the drill hacking guide?

http://robowars.org/guides/guides-drill-hacking.html

I built my first bot earlier this year and found this to be essential reading.

After my first event I also discovered BaneBots. If you are prepared to spend a bit of cash to get set up, their P60 gearboxes and BaneBots wheels or Colson wheels will make your life much easier.

Yeah, I am going to have to rethink the drive. Just did a dummy set up using the gear drive, way too slow.

I am amazed how long the drills run for using the standard batteries. Currently running the gearboxes in, and they have been running for about a 1/2 hr, and don't look like slowing down. No load, but even so.
