Definitely don't need $100+ transmitters.
Controlling with a car controller is possible, but to control two motors with tank steering you'll need channel mixing. Which I think most car transmitters won't do. So you'd want a v-tail mixer:

But I don't think these fit real well in ants, and add extra weight. Almost everyone uses flying style transmitters with driving on one stick and weapon on the other. Two drive motors and a weapon needs 3 channels, which most car transmitters won't do. I've got one car transmitter that is 3ch, but the 3rd channel is a switch, which also isn't ideal for weapons.
Right now, this transmitter is crazy cheap, and stocked in aust:

You could get two, one for you and your son for less than $50. And you simply flip switches to do the mixing. But any of the turnigy or hobbyking transmitters on that site are fine, I use a TGY-i6 with no problems.
