aluminium extrusion sizes
just did a search on google to find the common sizes of aluminium extrusions, but that didnt yield any results so ill ask here.
what are the common sizes of U-channel? ive heard 64mm base, 23mm long sides and 2.5mm thickness is common. but im not sure if the 64mm base includes the 2.5mm thickness on either side. a diagram to try make it more clear.
What size are you actually looking for.
On both Pinscher and T34 have used 100 x 40mm x 3mm which is very common I guess.
Usually the width would contain the side thickness so in your case 64 should be the max width. _________________ Bots that do not destroy you, only make you stronger.

Channel sizes don't follow much of a pattern. I think the manufacturers just make what they think people want and its further complicated by metric and imperial sizes. The two best places you can look for "typical" sizes is:
Another supplier near O'Brien's is:
http://www.ullrichmetals.com.au/index.htm
. They have a crap web site but often good prices on full lenghts of stock. Always ring for a price from these guys as the counter staff are not allowed to discount (trade secret ).
Keep in mind that their stock comes from several different suppliers and similar sizes are often quite different prices, possibly because some sizes are imported. Keep in mind that it can sometimes be cheaper to buy square or rectangular tube and cut it down (which I am very happy to do on my table saw). That's a neat trick for getting the channel or angle in a alloy grade you want. Alspec only sell in full lenghts while O'brien's will sell cut to length IF they have it in stock. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

Well i couldent fine anywhere to put this qustion so i put it here.
I am thinking about getting a black and decker 500watt jig saw for cutting ali up to 8mm thick would that be strong enoughf for that?
I saw a 370 watt black and decker jigsaw that says it can cut 8mm ali but i doubt it? _________________ Tim Team Reaper.

My 500w Makita jig saw has cut 8mm mild steel quite quickly. Just make sure it has a pendulm-action blade. A quick change blade holder is a feature you will appreciate too. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

What do you want to cut ?
Jigsaws arent the greatest for getting straight cuts . . . a circular saw with a negative rake blade will do a much better job. Just dont try and cut steel, or you could end up with saw blade teeth flying toward you . . . _________________ Jeff Ferrara

Sorry, I didn make that very clear.
What I ment was what shape do you want to cut?
If you want to cut sharp curves and the like then a jigsaw is the best. option, if all you want to do is cut in straight lines then a circ saw is the best by far for that. Ideally you would use both of them in together, circ saw for the striaght cuts, jigsaw for the curved ones. _________________ Jeff Ferrara

I wouldnt know what to do with it and how to work with the time.
I would just sell it to jake or glen or something. I am more of a build it yourself sort of thing. Unless its something i cant do like welding. _________________ Andrew Welch, Team Unconventional Robotics

Is aprox 30x30cm 3mm thick ali too thin for a base plate that has 8mm ali sides welded around it? _________________ Tim Team Reaper.
