Generally, bearing shops don't sell components like worm threads or worm gears. You probably better off looking at a company like a gear/transmission shop, a place that stocks these readily. The only place I know of is TEA Transmission, but I haven't personally checked out the prices or quality.

ok thanks, what about salvaged parts its for a relatively light winch mechanism. I thought a worm drive would provide the lock feature necessary in this application.

Well if its for a featherweight then using a windscreen wiper motor (a big one) through a small gearbox, say a boat winch gearbox (there bout 20-40$ that i have seen) and varie from 2:1 to bout 4:1. I think that would work alright maybe. windscreeen wiper motors have a crapload of torque and worm drive in there gearbox.

TEA Transmissions

TEA Transmissions have excellent information & service, however they are extremely expensive. ($120 for a 2" bearing with a V-groove in the outer raceway, designed for running along tracks)

I have ordered from them before when no one else could supply what I wanted in the time frame I had.

You would be better talking to people like Dodge Power Transmissions, SEW Eurodrive or Fenner Transmissions. These guys specialise in industrial power transmission.

Just my two cents worth. Razz

Windscreen wiper motor sounds good, if its got a worm drive gear in it i'm guessing the output will be locked when the motor is idle(not running). Thanks for the info ppl Very Happy

Well, I work next door to SEW Eurodrive (Queensland), they own the building I work in and I did a 100 page essay on one of there damn gearboxes for my final year uni project and all I can say is that even though they are fine gearboxes, they are way too big for a feather weight combat robot.

Hey assasin, this is one of the few topics on the forum that I can be of help.
I have heard of people somehow cutting the gearbox and shaft off of wiper motors for a nice strong gearbox for only the price of a wiper motor (I can get WW motors for $5 ea).
Then making a mounting adapter for the motor your planning on using wouldnt be THAT difficult with the right tools and materials (like a drill, couple of rivits and an ali bar).
The hardest part is the worm shaft, fitting it to your motor will be difficult. You have to find the exact centre and then use precision engineering to drill a hole exactly on the center mark.

oh well... food for though...

Iv e done a windscren Wiper _ winch motor conversion an its not al that easy not only does the motor have to be adapted buit the worm has to be centred like criss suggested but also the other end of the worm has to be held in anothr bearing or it will just twist with the more powerfull motor and strip the driven gear .. the wwmotor gear box i converted was one of the ones i made steel gears for
