Aussi robot pics

Hey guys! I was wondering if you all could post a pic of your robot(s) here in its current state so I can see what you guys have built! (and I need ideas )

Also, add a nice little bit of specs.

Thanks Very Happy

Try having a look at the Photo Album, RoboWars Event Photos
from Tim, Neweyn and many others, (look back through the RoboWars Thread for links, heres 1 to get you started)..

http://www.hotkey.net.au/~acerules/pastevents.html

and watch the video's from the Kero's..

That should be sufficient inspiration to get something together.. although no amount of "inspiration" will substitute for experience and work..

You can look at pitcutres all day, but you will learn a lot more in the first 10 minutes of actual work on your robot by trying to screw some bits together and figuring out what does and doesnt work (mistakes) rather than seeing what works for someone else already done minus the mistakes they made.

alrighty then.. i need to post something.. so so bored at the moment lol.

length is about 550-600mm, width about 400mm, 80mm high and basically exactly 13.6kg.

6mm steel all over, 10mm polycarbonate on the top and bottom, ibc control, should be using drill nicads now (3 of them) and the drive is two kk2 9.6v drills at 12v. its also got the second version of jakes wheels which kick ass and a half, no problems at all at robowars.

ermm and its got a big ass thwacker arm made from two pieces of box section and a 6mm steel scoopy on the end. and the spikes are made from a gearstick Very Happy

little robot, weighs about 580g at the moment. the disk is 150g in weight, 90mm in diameter and spins at ~9000rpm. sounds like an angry bee on steroids.

drive is two cybot drives with airplane wheels, i want to replace the motors with 12v versions so i can run everything at 12v.

ermm 6mm polycarbonate base, drilled out big time and the entire weapon system came out of a VCR, the motor that spins the weapon is a p9004 from dick smith (the big daddy one lol).

KANG -

in the works at the moment. the little pile of parts on wheels is the tester of it so i can test the setup of the drive.

its going to have 6mm ali side armour and back armour. 4mm steel base and 12v drills at 12v for drive. the weapon will be a 175mm drum thats 14mm thick and weighs ~2kg. plan is to spin it up real fast being a small diameter. im talking 5000rpms here.

and now im having flashbacks.....

AURORA -
http://www.abbl.org/photos/51.jpg

umm well it was my first robot... it was built for the failed bullant class which was like 2kg (technically i built it because andrew said some guy was holding an event for them) but it turned out pretty shoddy.

used a huge 550 motor to power the overhead bent bar which was like 600mm in diameter and weighed 150g. the batteries where a single 12v drill pack and the drive was those twin tamiya gearboxes.

the drives just kept shattering themselves and the way the weapon was mounted meant it just kept flying off, and if it did stay on it usually just flipped over.

wasnt too good at all but it was my first building exercise.

SCREWED -
http://www.abbl.org/photos/167.jpg
http://www.abbl.org/photos/166.jpg (one in between el b and violater)

embarrasing second attempt at a robot. this one was my first featherweight and didnt turn out too bad visually.

it was all built out of 6mm lexan bolted together with 25x25x3 L bracket and m6 bolts. there was a 2mm aluminium wedge on the back and a 4mm steel plate thing bolted on the front.

drive was 150mm wheels and 9.6v drills running of a 12v 7ah SLA. the controls where a switch system with servos and microswitches.

it failed miserably because the motor mounts just broke almost instantly and the wires ripped off the speed controllers when the motors spun around.. it moved about 10cm and stopped.

SCREWY - (cant seem to find any photos of it.. ill dig one up tonight.)

well screwy had a novel history. basically i was going to robowars and had no robot. so i needed one obviously and was getting bored as hell so i called welch up to come over and said "help me finish my robowars bot" , despite not having even started it.. so about 2 hours before he came over i grabbed screweds frame, cut it in half, and moved the sides closer in so the wheels where on the outside and thus screwy was born.

it had no wedge, or no plow and weighed like 6kg. i soldered on all the wires and got better motor mounts made by jeff and headed off to robowars.

it worked awesome for what it was. i mean against IBC powered bots and stuff it worked alright, it only ever clagged when i flipped myself over on batty bot and the hastily resoldered LED wire shorted out on the power switch and the whole wiring melted down, w00t.

COBRA (lexan version) -
http://www.abbl.org/photos/303.jpg

im actually proud of this little robot looking back on the videos and pictures.

given i built it almost entirely myself it wasnt to bad. it was essentially screwy, but i bolted a hammer onto the back that nick welded for us, and added an IBC to control the works.

it was ridiculously fast, add a couple of meters per second and top of inspector general and thats what im getting at. it had 150mm wheels on 9.6v drills at 12v and used a singlel 7ah SLA for power. the IBC was just packed into the top of the bot and rested snuggly over the motor mounts and between the battery and side. armour was 6mm polycarb and it just used ali l bracket to bolt it all together.

the spin speed on it was easily as fast as arachnophobia and the hammer length was really long, it was about 420mm i think.

looking back on it i should have kept it around..

and thus concludes team auroras history Laughing now wake up all of you hehe

Ah yes, I forgot to mention that. Rick (The Moth) has had it sitting on his mantlepiece for years.

He and I built it many moons ago when we worked as Service Tech's at a company called I.E.I. (Its amazing what bored Techs get up to.. we had a competition with the other departments in the place.. the rules were you had to use junk lying around the work building, no buying or bringing in parts - hence the use of old printer motors and alarm system radio controls etc)

Its so old now, that the rubber-bands it used as tank-treads have perished and you can tell its made using my favourite construction technique - Hot-Glue.. Laughing

The "capacitor-canon" was a thing to be feared indeed. it took us much research before we found a suitable capacitor that had no safety vent and exploded nicely when reverse-polarised to power the darts. As you might be able to tell from the photo's it even had a remote-controlled muzzle-elevation system on it. Take *that* T-34 ! Wink

This would have to be the oldest Australian combat robot that I know of.. can anyone top 1989 ?

Not quite robot combat, what about arm wrestling humans in 1983.

Oldest thing I could find was a virtual combat robot created in 1991.

Had previously posted this pic http://robowars.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=233

Was created with sofware called Swivel 3D and Rendered out with Pixars renderman. This software allows setting limit points on actuators so even though u had to manually position each element for animations, it would not let you position anything outside its range.

Claws and legs where designed to work so everything moved as it should. Never took it further. The body was just to wrap it up. The hip joints are the only thing that where never finished so where left as ball joints.

Theres a bit of similarity in the weapon to how KingPin has ended up oddly enuff. Both based on a tree grappler it was invertable and closed complety, just wasnt a wedge as it was a claw.
The background is a fake but. Created that in photshop and plced it behind the rendered file.

Looks a bit like spider hoe, even has a leg lifted but forgot to place a wheel in there. lol. Only difference is this actually worked in 3D space as it should. Very Happy

Took a long time to render 40 frames in 3D in 1991

Have a look at:
http://rankings.robowars.org

For most of the robots I have put a link to a page that includes a photo of the robot.
