Can anyone think of a place to get thin stainless steel sheet at a good price? I need a piece about 250 to 300mm square and around 1mm thick. The dimensions are not at all critical, about the only requirement is to be flat & smooth.

Maybe someone who makes commercial kitchens would sell you an off cut.

I've gotten that size in 3mm from edcon. Don't know if they have it that thin but they definitely had plenty in said thickness.

2 good ideas! I didn't know Edcon sold stainless; 3mm would be fine, just more expensive. I also found some off-cuts on Ebay but the postage was more than the steel.

UPDATE: Edcon does stainless from .45mm thick; I will get a quote for 1.2mm - thanks for the pointer Glen Smile.

My local lasercutting place is crazy cheap for stainless - do you just need a plate or does it have some form to it? Seriously I haven't yet gone beyond their $66 minimum...

INTERESTED! What I need is a disc about 250mm with an 8mm hole in the centre. Its for a home made oil skimmer for a new flood coolant system I am putting together:

Something like that can easily cost over $200 and I figure the parts can be had for about $60; I already have a neato 240V gear motor, the frame is cheap steel angle and a small amount of thin UHMW for the wiper blades.

Sorry nick totally missed this!

I'll shoot a dxf off to them for a quote - how thin do you reckon? Worried a little about it being bowed by the laser's heat but 2mm should be OK I think.

On another note, just talked to these guys who bring in all manner of thread-lockers and such, probably expensive but good to know http://www.eal.com.au/

Thanks Angus, I will PM a drawing to you. Will laser cutting really bend a large steel part? I had some much thinner spring steel cut into small parts and it didn'y warp at all. A small amount of warp would be OK as the flexible wiper blades will follow the disk surface.

If it helps I've had 2mm stainless plates laser cut in the past, 266 x 270 with about 15-20 holes in them and there was no warping.

mine came from a guy in NSW. Lightning EV maybe? But sorting the genuine ones from the crap is hard, cause i believe they are all A123 made, the rejects just got harvested and sold on so they are "genuine" afaik.

True Glen and there is no way of telling without testing the cells before you buy if they are rejects.
