You'd be supprised actualy... As you get into the thinner grades it gets REAL flexy. Hell you can bend the 2.5mm sheet with your hands against your knee slightly, and I believe the 1mm Ti is even worse!
Hmm I do have a 5.5mm sheet... Twisted Evil lol

Eh andrew's right... I've been looking through some of the american beetleweight results and all the bots with the most wins seem to be the vert spinners Confused
Give me moment... Cool

I think the disk would have a bit of flex in it, but with a soft drive wheel or a spring mount on the brushless motor, it wouldn't hurt the motor any. How big (or heavy) is the disk and what power is the motor? On Slash, I am using a small AXI 2808 with around 3:1 reduction to a 170mm disk. It starts up so hard it spins the rest of the bot around uncontrollably and I have to limit the motor speed to around 50% to make it diveable. Go the friction drive!

Batteries should be here within a week.
Same with aluminium and weapon motor/esc
Very Happy Can't wait to get cracking on it!

Just to let people know, the brushless is alive and kicking now... Twisted Evil
I should get a video of it...
EDIT/ Yeah Nick, the motor is 35A and the controler is 60A Laughing
Methinks a vert design is better to stop the insane spinnings lol. Laughing
Hrmm that's a crapload of gyro! Shocked /EDIT

Well got a fair amount done on the beetle today. I picked up my 24 little 2/3A venom 1200mah cells from hobbyco and made up a neat little 12v battery pack (smaller and better run time than the crappy 700mah AA's).
I also got my 6061 I was going to use for the frame, but worked out it would be WAY too heavy, plus there would be an under 1mm wall thickness to fit everything so it's not gonna happen Laughing
Might go FBS or undercutter style, will see what is easier. Smile
Oh also my brushless ESC decided to die as well... the battery switch was on when i connected it, sort of stuttering the power on to the ESC, and I think it's damaged the circuitry. Shame... you get what you pay for eh... Sad

EDIT/ Here's a picture of the battery I made up today, with my other random beetle weight gear. Smile

And what is easier is... vert spinner Laughing Laughing Laughing damn I should just stop planning robots all together...
I got the base done, with the maxons and took it for a test drive this arvo. They have a fairly respectable speed, but the speed control whine from them is louder than drills! Laughing
I'll post a video once the camera batteries are done. I'll be mounting it all into the semi compete frame tomorrow, then it's onto the weapon. Smile

Seeing as today I couldn't really work on my feather due to lack of the right drill bits, I did some effort in my little beetle, and got the weapon working. The challenge was to clamp the solid friction wheel onto the disk without it being too loose and not working, or too tight and seizing up. I ended up making up a stainless motor mount which has a curve in it, and two screws passing through it into the UHMW. This way it kind of acts like a spring and lets me fine tune the friction disk by tightening or loostening the screws. Works pretty well!
Here's a small vid, it's done better hits since though, but filming is a drag. Laughing

EDIT: Also just put up a video of some of my better beetleweights over the few years i've been into robots. Enjoy! Very Happy (gawd damn i've built so many, and yet had no proper comp with any of em!)

What do people think of this controler?
http://www.wattsuprc.com.au/product_detail.asp?pid=K10256A
Align worth trusting? For I know that HOBBYKONG sure as hell isn't, up to two replacements now, they randomly die before even reaching the robot! Confused
EDIT: Oh and look at this: http://www.wattsuprc.com.au/product_detail.asp?pid=K10212A
mmm reversible... lol beetleweight cobra with brushless drives? Twisted Evil

Already been done. Anto, a UK Antweight uses two brushless motors as drive wheels...

I believe there are the issues of 90% of hobby brushless controllers being sensorless and having trouble finding out which direction the motor is actually going when they need to reverse...
