WindStorm - Team Knightrous - QLD [1280 x 960]
Well I promised that I wouldn't start this thread till I have 50% of the parts and started cutting out the armour. So I've kept my promise.
WindStorm is the revival of my super old SuperAnt from back in 2002. But I'm only reviving the name for my featherweight entry at the Marayong Tornado Tag Team.
WindStorm is a basic robot, designed to be simple, sturdy, easy to construct/repair and easy to drive. Below is some basic specs of WindStorm.
Name: WindStorm
Weight: Approx. 13.5kg (when complete)
Drive: 2 x 18v GMC 340w two-stage drill motors. Very similar to the Dewalts in the gearbox, but have Johnson motors. The robot runs 6WD via chain and sprockets (parts ordered, waiting for them to arrive) and should cruise around at 25km/h in high gear.
Armor: 2mm stainless steel top and bottom, 3mm stainless steel sides. (Temporary till I can get a sheet of 4mm Hardox 400)
Batteries: 20 x CP2400SCR's making a 24v pack.
Controller: IBC with Fan.

and I'll upload a photo of the stainless armour I cut today when I get my digital cam back. Tommorow I'm starting work on the drive train/bulk head combination.

lol, whats with all the low bots? I wonder what a cobra vs windstorm vs subliminal would be like! _________________ ( •_•)
Well currently I've left a fair bit of ground clearance (7-8mm) so I'll probably get wedged from the sides and back if up against Cobra and Subliminal But I'm hoping to have at least 2-3 wheels on the ground if a wedge gets under me, which will let me drive off them. On the front I'm looking at mounting a hinged wedge to scrap the ground for those low robots. Will probably use some 2mm stainless and sharpen the leading edge with the grinder.
WindStorm is still a fair size robot, measuring 450mm x 500mm x 75mm (LxWxH). I'm hoping that being low and having angled fronts and sides, I can give the spinners a few love taps before they get up to speed _________________ https://www.halfdonethings.com/

It sounds like I will really have to start work on the undercutter version of Jolt - can't have all these low hight bots pushing it around....

I'm still waiting for a quote on a 3000 x 1500 x 4mm sheet of Hardox 400. Brisbane Branch seem a little slow on their emails right now. I'm looking at buying a full sheet as it will also go towards the upgrade for Vertex and some other projects of mine.
Well I've been a little slack this week with building, mainly because I've been computer shopping and LAN partying again....
Although, I have completed my 24v intercooled battle pack, just need to find two 12v 40mm fans to bolt onto the end of it. Little suspect on one cell as it got a little hot during the first charge, but it seemed fine on the second charge... I'll just keep an eye on it after some drive tests to see if it's going to be a problem.
After 10 cycles through the triton, the suspect cells have appeared to been fine. They not longer get warm and the pack is working as planned. Just need to cover the top in material tape now to finish it off.
I also tack welded the panels this morning to see how I was going for space. It looks fairly good and I'm pleased that I've only made a few minor errors while cutting the panels out with the grinder (one is 1mm higher then the other). I also finished the drive trail rails and mounted the motors rough house fashion into them. Still have to make the back plate mounts which support the motors themselves yet, but tht isn't hard.
On my way home from Brisbane tommorow after picking up my Nissan Silvia, I'm going to swing in to Cooloola Sheet Metal and see if they have any 2mm stainless. I'm going to use this for the base plate and top cover. It's mainly protection from Scoopy Doo
I'm also going to cut back my 24v NiCD packs down to 18v, due to four reasons. 1. 18v is lighter then 24v. 2. On 18v, the IBC and motors will survive longer. 3. Charging time will be quicker & 4. 18v packs are smaller then 24v.
I've emailled Oatley's about ordering 6 sprockets, but the gits seem to be extremely slow at replying to mail these days. So I'm unsure when I'll have the drive train finished.
[EDIT]: I've decided to forget about buying a new sheet of stainless and will just glue two sheets of 1.2mm stainless together, which I have sitting over at Andrews. So that will save me some cash _________________ https://www.halfdonethings.com/

Well accident #1 happened today. But thanks to duct tape surgery, my finger will live on My finger slipped off a G-Clamp into the 22mm spade bit @ 450rpm....
Anyway, on with the progress. I left the 24v pack as is. We'll see how things go in low gear before using high gear. I covered the pack with two layers of duct tape (infinite purposes) and that finishes off the pack.
Machined the back hubs out of the wheels and so I can make up the shaft adapter on the back of them. Changed the layout of the inners and I've ordered some angle steel to go inside for bracing the stainless. Also found I might just have enough space to add a weapon on the front. More on that as it eventuates.

Nah, my house is nice and warm and I'm too lazy to shift the house. Will just steal the lathe and mount it to my work bench
