They look nice, I remember reading about them a while back to, but I cant understand why they only support 3 channels..

Surely in a flash-o digital system it wouldnt be that hard to add a few extra channels ? They're little use to me with just 3.

Just got back an email from the specktrum people.
It turns out that they are developing a 6-channel version (still for surface use) because a LOT of people have been asking for one for robotic combat. They have apparentely also had quite a few people after them for RC battleship combat and RC tank combat....
cool.

@Marto... yeah I'll sell the laser 4. Since I still owe you $50 from the arena construction, it will be a very cheap radio Smile

yup.
I'm using a 3 channel wheel radio. The 3rd channel is a 5 position aux. (position 3= neutral, 2= 30deg on, 1= 60deg on, 4= 30deg reverse, 5= 60deg reverse) to control the weapon.

How's this for a radio test. Locked a witness in the arena with an rc vehicle. I then went down to the local shop (approx 300m from my place) while turning the steering constantly. When I returned to the arena.... the witness said the front wheels were smoothly moving left/right/etc/etc constantly while I was gone.

So that is clear reception from 400m away - in seperate buildings (one of which is the arena (iron shed)...... not bad.

Not bad at all.

In my experience there is a *big* difference in range between gently moving the little servo-motor powered steering wheels of an RC car back an forward at 0.5A of current, and slamming 50+ amps of current through two big drill motors in a bot..

I hope the SS gear performs as well in the more hostile environment.

I'm surprised they didnt make the SS gear available with a lot more channels and features, given the type of radio data link they are probably using probably wouldnt raise a sweat sending 24 channels and possibly feedback as well.

It could be a marketing decision to not undercut the thousand-dollar big model radio's and piss Futaba/JR etc off, or a friend of mine thinks they might want to deliberately stay away from the aircraft market to avoid the increased legal liability issues.

The 5 position aux sounds weird too.. why not make it a full analog servo channel ? That sounds like it would even limit its use in RC cars for brakes and similair.

5 position is more than any FM wheel radio, the only ones ive seen have an on and off position.

how much did that unit set you back? did you have to buy the radio with it as well or did you already have one and just need to put the little module in it

I agree; the third channel settings would be good for proportional control of weapon motors and it's more then my radio can do.

Most importantly - where did you buy it from? The final bonus is that the frequency is legal in australia, so competitors with 75MHz radios could get legal again.

Can't wait to test SS in a working bot.... hopefully this sunday.

The 5 position aux channel is mostly used in rc nitro boats for remote carby tuning. I've also seen them used to pull a parachute open on an rc drag car... but I'd prefer a normal movement channel too.

The Tx I've got is about 5 years old. It's a "Hitech Lynx 3D". They were one of the first 3 channel wheel radios to come out with the changeable frequency modules (so you can goto 27, 29, 40, 72 or 75 mhz just by plugging in the module of your choice - and replace your reciever as well).

There are far better digital/module radios out now (the LCD screen on my radio is huge by comparison) from $295 to $500 depending on brand/features and place of purchase. The spectrum module and reciever are around $180 to$350 retail in Aus (once again depending on place of purchase).
The standard SS set available is approx $400 Aus, but has very few features - used together with an IBC would solve all that though.
I went to SS because I already had a good quality radio that I could upgrade.
I think it would be cheaper to go PCM 4+ channels if you don't have a module radio in the first place.

Smile I sent an email to the spectrum people ages ago and just recently got a reply. They are currently working on SS for aircraft but are having difficulties with the transciever. They are bringing out a 4 channel surface SS set aimed at robot combat and rc battleship and rc tank use... after they release the aircraft SS stuff.

They said ESCs will be a thing of the past. Will that mean we won't have to use ESCs?
