Did a short drive test today to get a feel of where its at. Batteries and ESC where not secured so tried to behave.

Its not that pretty but it was more of a shock test.

Almost done on the Tank side of things (M41) and will soon start on the New version of POD for Jan which will be somewhat different.
Going back to an old idea from bulding T34 of scoring and bending metal to shape, then welding the seams.
It will look a lot like a space ship from a popular sci fi film but as they say,
loose lips, sink robots.

Anyways heres M41 looking like there is too much tension in the springs,
Feel free to comment on how the suspension is looking at this stage. Am still learning myself.

Yes thanks, got the LEDs and um pretty much destroyed them within 20 minutes, Very Happy But there was light for a while, Might have held them backwards too long.
One of the wires on the LEDs was longer, would this be positive or negative? for future reference

Yeah, one is always + and the other -... forgot which exactly, wikipedia it perhaps, but that's how you know. Also they have a little notch in their side indicating + and - too.

Razz Noobs! For LEDs with chopped legs, the side of the LED that has a small flat bit is the negative

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LED

I demand you all go here and read up! There will be a quiz tomorrow! Razz

Just thinking Pod would make a really good ref bot.

Robowars might be too big an event for him but rounds of the state series where the public attends I think he would be a real asset.

Arena sweeper and pod could combine to clean up after demos etc.

that's if the competitors manage not to attack Pod in the process of combat... Look at all the "accidents" that happened to the Refbot in RobotWarsUK Laughing

Just became the proud owner of a pair of twins, motors that is.
The motors arent really for Pod as have started building a bigger tracked bot so needed more power but didnt really want to go the 200 size scooter motor.

Going to try out some motors similar in size to 100 watt scooters but different specs.
The only thing that doent make me go Woohoo is that it uses bushes insted of bearings.
Am thinking of doing a mod and replacing the bushs with new bearings so thought to ask anyone out there if thay have any insight, thoughts or data regarding this.
Am curious as to what to expect,

Will it improve the overall efficency of the motor?

Bushs are used in many motors and cant say have seen any have damaged bushs so is it worth it?, Would anyone have any thoughts as to should I expect any difference in the motor.
Are there any facts around anywhere on comparing bushs to bearings when used in a motor? Any comments welcome
Has anyone done this before?

Wikipedia is always a good place to start

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_(mechanical)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bearing_(mechanical)

The "dumb and simple" summary of the advantages of one vs the other that I learned was that bushes are lighter and simpler, can handle higher *peak* (not sustained) loads, but require regular lubrication if long life (lots of sustained revs) is required.

Bearings (ball/roller etc) are heavier, more expensive and complicated and deform under sudden impacts, but can run for longer with higher *constant* loads (not shocks) on them.

For low-mileage robot-use motors that dont have to deal with constant side-loads, a bush with the right clearance and a spot of oil is probably just as good as a ball-bearing efficiency wise. perhaps even a bit better ?

Of course, my experience with such things is spotty and restricted to the few mechanical hobbies I have had over time. Someone who works with mechanisms as their profession like andrew or gary would probably have a broader base to rest their opinions on.. but thats my 20c for what its worth Smile
