Woodzilla - Team Aurora - NSW

call it biting off more than one can chew but im going to make a wood robot for the class. have lots of unused parts around here.

680-830kg/m^3 is the density of MDF ive found so some verfication on that would be great (google did a crap job turning up results for that query i tell you what..). But now to the robot:

Tentative designs thus far are for a crusher robot. pretty well a scaled up version of my beetleweight. Horizontal jaws powered by a 12v drill motor thats been custom modified for a threaded rod.

12mm MDF construction (a big panel of 12mm mdf from bunnings is only about $10) for the most part, 12v drills at 12v for the drive and a single 12v 2400mah nicad pack on the drive.

the control is going to be quite wierd if i may say so, the servos are all tied up in kang so i cant use that method of control, and i cant have a weapon with only 2ch anyway so im going to plunder the infra red controllers out of the beetleweight too.

seem to get insane range with them, at least 15m so far, which is good for a lego set, and i havent managed to get them to go haywire, if you block the IR ports it just cuts out. seems decent for me so far. these are going to set off small relays/transistors as the IR controllers run off 7.2v and output the same and these will in turn fire off the big ones at 12v. i was thinking about using some form of booster but im not that electrically inclined so meh.

crusher will run on a solid stationary 16mm stainless steel axle with bearings in each jaw piece. jaws i would like make of 4.5mm steel all the way but approval on that part would be great. MDF jaws with steel tips might be dooable as well.

there is a 4th channel available on my controller so im thinking of some other features. remote shutdown is a plausible option if thats what people would like. a little 12v saw is another thought that sits in between the jaws.

also looking at making some custom gearboxes. its a shame i gave away that kiddy car gearbox. there you have woodzilla! Cads and further designs coming soon.

found some time now with the robots not working (steel for cobra comes on wednesday so nothing to do until then) to design up the wooden robot.

it was originally going to be a crusher or a shuffler but i think something more easy to produce is the hot ticket for now so here is the design of it. kinda loosely based on VD3 and kang.

same weapon system as kang with the big ole nichi-ra fan motor run at 24v onto a 230mm saw blade. vertical this time though. powered by the spare 3ah 24v NIMH pack and drive is just to be some 12v drills at 24v with red wheels to prevent annihilation of them. it should also be 100% invertible which is a nice change as it can ride around on those funky verticals in the back.

weight is going to be interesting as the frame weighs next to nothing at this stage, its like 2kg or so. size is some 400mm and 220mm x 240mm tall or so.

theres also another channel on the controller so i might have to shove a lifter on there as well, which would kick ass to the extreme and also make the wiring quite shocking lol.

and for the energy thang it should be about 900g of spinning mass, 4000rpm or so and 230mm diameter.

ill get some MDF on get onto building it poste haste, time to make some sawdust Smile

Very interesting! From my experience with MDF, the self-righting prongs are a bit thin and would snap easily. you might also need a taller/wider brace to the back of the saw motor.

If it works OK in MDF, you should think about making it in aluminium Smile .

lol yeah, and call that one kodos Smile

i was thinking of using threaded rod as the arms but i thought id go full fisted and use the wood eh eh, but spiky threaded rod would be much kewler.

now you mention it i may well shove an extra brace that fits around the middle of the motor and screws into the very top of the motor plate.

PLENTY of work done as i had to take my laptop back on monday Mad so im on this crap shack of a toshiba for the moment.

got two 900 x 450 x 12mm panels of MDF for $8 each from bunnings, bargain, and cut them all up. turns out MDF is the messiest crap ever and all the dust makes you sick as so lesson learnt.

its all looking really strong so far and very compact. the saw vertical mount cant really be completed until i get an additional motor for it. but its looking fairly good at this stage. looks REALLY light so might even make it into the hobbyweights lol.

drives are mounted with a pair of home made jeffs hubs and the batteries are mounted. seems good. i need to swing a few screws from the box i left at jeffs before i put it together but for now its coming along really quickly. shibby.

the self righting forks are also going to be some bent 8mm threaded rod and should look like little smoke stacks when there done. should be kewl looking.

pictwahs (the motor plate will be much more level and sit back a fair amount more)-

motor and weapon braces are done. those funny cuts in the triangles are for the motor to slot in to.

frame seems mostly complete and at this stage everything weighs less than 7kg, what the.... so plenty of MDF to be strapped on there. next ill be breaking out the wood glue and wood screws and finishing the frame then getting the second motor.

i wood glued all the frame pieces up so i could see how it would stand and look etc. extremely light and the wood glue actually holds on pretty tight, i dont think ill be taking the panels apart any more heh.

ive got some 3mm ali 50x50 angle ill bolt it all together with m6s. i was going to screw it all together into the edges of the panels but in retrospect that is just plain weak.

i have to find out what to do with the extra weight as well now. im thinking of 2 or 3 extra shock mounted panels on the front angled panels and alot of bracing around the weapon area again.

theres a picture for you all, you can see too one of the L brackets thatll hold most of it together as well.

with all the talk of flippers a compressor powered lifter is definitely a consideration, doing a saw all over again is sounding a little old...

I'd run the robot upside down. Keep the batteries and controllers away from the enemy and maximise the saws impact area. But I don't think straight.

plenty of stuff done on woodzilla. firstly the layout has changed a fair bit.

originally twas going to use a 24v pack in there, but 24v is alot of power for such a fragile bot so i think its a safe bet i wont be using that saw.. its robbing parts from kang and ill have to buy a new motor = pfshhh (me buy something Rolling Eyes )

so i took my spare 12v 2.4ah nicad packs and shoved that in, instead. plenty of space saved and weight lost, and i can use 9.6v motors which i have about 7 of at the moment compared to the 0 12v ones i have. the battery bay has now changed its shape and the relays pack in right next to the battery. all 4 of them at the moment.

another thing ive done is reversed the robots orientation.. i thought it looked really spastic with the big chunky part of the robot as the front so now the wheel end is the front and the chunky ass is the rear.. looks far better IMHO. gives it more of an aggressive look. reminds me of scarifier that way too.

and ive started to look at the control system finally. innovation is always a good thing so im very keen to use the IR controllers. there voltage is about 4.5v standard so i had a 4.8v pack in there to power things, but that wouldnt give enough voltage to set off the relays so ive replaced that with a 7.2v flat pack, which surprisingly sets off the relays reliably. i let one sit for a half hour and it didnt click off, and i shook it around too and didnt have it click on and off.

all the controllers and its battery pack is stored in one of cobras old red battery boxes. it fits all together well. the battery sits flat on the bottom and then theres abit of foam around it, then the controllers are above that encased in even more foam. the box is bolted down internally with 4x m4s.

the drill actuator andrew gave us shall definitely get used somewhere in this contraption, itd be rude to not use something that cool.. at the moment its making some really bad noises, i think a gear inside it is stripped out so ill take that apart soon. thinking of something like a scarifier lifter with a few hackifications... something about that one drill mech i really like.

was pondering a pnuematic version too, and a couple of drunk hobos in the city gave us an idea.. using a goon bag valve as a poppet somehow, dont know how much pressure theyll take but they look about right.

re-arranged the guts. all the little walls and sections make for an ultra good fit on pretty well everything.

the front section is also bolted in, 5x m6s on that job and i used washers on them to make sure they wouldnt rip through the wood.

the motor mounts fit in so damn tight now the left motor ive got to pop into place now, which im really happy about. also will remake the motor supports as the holesaw was shaking about and made the hole too big. i found theres a grub screw on them that has to be tightened.

still need to break off the rear panel, make a new one long piece and bolt that on. also want to remake the two other bits that i cut the wrong height.

coming along nicely at this point

coolness, finally worked out how to add pictures in like nicks Smile

as you can see the rear panel got remade and ive bolted that in with some more 50x50 ali L braket with 5x m6 bolts. i had to notch the bottom of the L bracket pretty good to make it fit around all the little internal walls. but it all works.

i broke off the wrong height panels and remade and glued in new ones, fits like a glove. ahh and i also made some L brackets that are officially cut up big time to fit in to hold on the side angled panels. they have a few cuts in them to get them to fit around the walls. i didnt have any new bracket so i used this scrap as a template. fits well, you have to hammer them in.

also put in the actuator for show in that picture, thats probably about the correct angled but itll probably be a little further back.

im glad i used this aluminium L bracket to make it now, its tall enough so that if anything goes all the way through the wood it should stop the sweet sweet (expensive) candy within from being owned. its also nice to totally build the entire robot myself for once. first time ive ever done that......

oh yeah and weight as it is there in that pic is 3.8kg maybe i may change the base over to 3mm aluminium if thats allowed? failing that ill bolt in some strategic strips of it to prevent it tearing itself up.
