Usualy the local dump here some cities have trash and treasure type stores at their local dumps these are a great source of cheap wheapons motors and all sorts of stuff. once you get the bug you will look at all sorts of thisng that you would normaly just walk past and see iff its something you can use on a robot ..
any strong metals ect can be used for armour or chasis ect
old cars are a good source of wheapons motors and relays and wireing

At the moment we dont have any arena's that will contain Middle or Heavy weights. Some arena owners are allowing light Weights 25 --28. something kgs with non spinner wheapons to run iff they think the arena wil contain them safely .
George in Vic and Team rotwang (Garry ) in vic have lightweight the Keerroos in Qld have a light weight and there are a couple more but i cant rember who thy are.

Iff you are starting out on your first robot even though its a lame idea the best thing is to start with something smaller that doesnt cost to much .once you go over feather or light weight then you realy need heavy duty motors ect that arent easily scrounged or cheap to buy .

My best advise is to start in the feather or light weight class and build a rammer or wedge or thwack bot type Then leave room in your desighn to add an active wheapon at a later date . Once you get more confident with building control systems . The motor controlers are the hardest part or most expensive part (if you buy them ready made ) to build .

I have built several cheaper types that i and others can advise you on building .The cheapest type is just a servo switching micro switches .A lot of the younger NSW blokes had reasonably good succes with these but they just switch the motors full on and off, foward and reverse, with no in betweens .

Another type i desighned and shared with other s who have since built their own versions of these are the drill trigger controlers useing a servo to push a drill trigger in and out and turn micro switches on and off for foward and revese a few Of the NSW blokes are still useing these succesfully and swear they wont buy an electonic controler .
.I have also used the small circute boards out of servos to electricaly turn..... Fetts.. on and off, which are ( high power transistor type thingy's ) with the PWM ( pulsed width modulation they generate )--in easier terms it pulses power on and off several times a second to trick the motors they are geting a lower voltage .
These controlers work fairly well also, but are a lot harder to understand and build but can be fairy cheap sucesfull. I have run a set in a couple of our robots . Or you can just save up and Buy ready made ones like Bretts (spockie Tech's) IBC , or over seas brand controlers are available like vantecs and a whole heap of others.

We really only run Featherweights atm if you want a list of all bots past and present have a look at the rankings. I think there's a link on the main robowars page.

And trust me you will be surprised what you can do with a featherweight the only thing that might be too hard to do on that small a scale would be hydraulics but i'd say someones prolly done that already to prove me wrong.

The rules say no liqiud weapons.

Besides water will only wreck the electronics in the long run not during a fight not enoughf to win it.

why not make a flame thrower?.
the thing is they aint that affective unless you can get armor off and into the soft electronics.
