Air compressor motors

Saw and spoke alot about "compressor motors" on the weekend...
just wondering where to source them (without being ripped off for a change)
...and is there a particular motor to get?

I'm guessing your talking about the 300psi motors like that of which is in Vertical Limits and was in The Aggressor.

We use to source them from Marshal who manage to pick up a few pallet loads of damaged stock from the company he worked for. But he's unable to source them now. But fear not, when we recieved our first 300psi motors, we found that they are nearly identical to the Mini EV's sold at the RMP (http://www.robotmarketplace.com)

There's always those smaller 12v compressors, for like only $6 from supercheap but they wouldn't be too powerfull (only go up to 100psi i think). Smile

$6 air compressor has a RS-540 motor.

A RS-540 + 200mm saw blade + a rubber model aircraft wheel + bearings and thread rod = tool boxes flying 1m in the air and coke bottles hitting 10m in the air. Twisted Evil

Daniel's robot had that design. I have a video of it hitting the toolbox. I will send you a copy via email if you give me your address. It is 3.1Mb.

In that price range, wouldn't you be better off with a salvaged fan motor for a weapon? RS55x motors struggle to get out 100W, while a fan motor will do around 300W and not blow it's brushes off when you over-volt it. I am always amazed at how much power Plan B gets from one of the Mitsubishi pancake motors.

Pancake motors don't always fit the space you have to work with though. And I thought you would have learnt your lesson about overvolting Nick!

OK, the pancake motors don't fit well in a low drum bot design and they would be pretty useless for driving wheels (although not impossible). They are excellent for indirect drive to all types on horizontal spinning weapons and allow a thinner chassis that you can get with regular can motors. They would also work in tall vertical spinners like Orbit. I'm not knocking the compressor motors, just pointing out that there are other choices in the $10 and under price range.

I certainly have learnt my lesson about over-volting; forget RS55x drill motors and buy a quality unit, then over-volt the hell out of it! Laughing Laughing

When I think back on the NSW bots, everyone who has pushed a drill motor more than 4 to 6 volts over it's rating has had regular burn-outs; Cobra, Jolt, All Jeff F's bots, Orbit, etc. On the other hand, their weapon motors never burnt out at the same voltage. People have been using EVs, Dewalts and fan motors at up to 24V with no voltage problems.

very true there nick,
i think vd3 uses two makita drill motors with like 4:1 reduction (motor not gearbox) and hasnt butned any out from what ive seen.

Plus Orbit hasnt blown a drill motor yet i think, got them really ot but havnt blown any up yet, Prob caus i barely make it to the end of a match Razz.

The compressor motor that runs the weapon on Vertical Limits is less than 1/3rd the weight of the motor I was going to use.... how heavy are the fan motors compared to a compressor motor?

.... the $10 for a fan motor, is that from a wreckers or brand new ?

I'm looking to source motors in Aust., as I hate using credit cards over the phone or on the net...

I'm sure the compressor motor will be lighter than the fan motor. The fan motors have large ballbearings, thick steel case and a thicker shaft, which all adds up. You can cut the case down a bit, but that's all. The fans come from wrecker's, we get them from Pick & Pay less in Sydney. You can pay from $5 to $15 for them, with $5 being more common.

You can also get smaller pancake motors if you need something lighter. Many jap cars have them and I would guess they are 1/2 to 2/3 the weight of the big model - less power of course.

Since I've got young children with me most of the time, trawling around wreckers isn't safe, so I made a visit to the local super cheap auto.....
the $7 compressor was 120 psi, but they had a 250 psi compressor for $15.
The $15 one is about to be deleted from their range, so they gave me them for $10 each.

Not sure if the psi is solely related to the pumping motor (or is it the pump mechanism?) but they appear different from what I could see through the cases while in the shop.

The 120psi motor is an RS-540 and then 250psi will be a RS-550. IF your going to try to spin that big 4kg flywheel of yours with one of them, expect smoke Razz
