hey 6x rs-550s would be cool.

i think the mini evs explode too if you put 24v through them IIRC. those HTI ones might be worth a look.

but for 4kg of weapon your gunna need some big motors. dewalts or some of the more massive graupner speed series would be the dead minimum one would think

The motor I was going to use is a non-geared rc plane starter motor (sullivan motor - style) but it is 1.5kg.

VL has a ?3kg disk and chops up cavitiy-brick blocks with ease. I would think with gearing (via v belt and pulleys) that it would handle 4.5kg wheel.

Multiple RS-550 motors = battery eatters..
Dewalt motors = battery eatters...

For what Nick is trying to do, machining 1kg out of the disc and using a 100watt scooter motor is probably his best solution. Low amperage draw motor that has plenty of torque should make the weapon go the distance.

Nic should use a 5W motor when he fight Marauder.

Yes, but there is a limit. If your going to have to shove in 2kW or power to only get 1kW back out, it's a waste of time Razz Reboot and Plan B show you that low wattage motors can still pull off the party powers.

You also have to think about the shock damage to the motor, particularly if you are gearing it with belt drive. The plane starter motors are not noted for their long-term strength and if you are loading it heavily, it will eat up your batteries and generate much heat.

No matter what type of motor you use it will always be more efficient to use a single large one rather than multiple small ones: There is more mounting cases, bearings, brushes, wiring etc and you might not save much money.

IMHO, a 4.5Kg disk is too much in a feather, Plan D and Jolt are using around 2Kg weapons and we both could do with spare weight for other things like armour and batteries. With 33% of your weight limit taken up with a weapon, you will be sacrificing some or all of the other essentials like armour, power or locomotion.

A large mass also takes much longer to spin up - even with a mag motor geared 2:1 and only 1.8Kg of weapon, Jolt still takes 3 to 5 seconds and Orbit with a 1:1 geared EV Warrior takes quite a bit longer.

Another good reason to use a larger motor is the larger shaft size; The HTI, Mini EV and Dewalt motors only have 5mm shafts, while the RS5xx motors have 3mm or 1/8". I know Jeff Ferrara had trouble getting larger pulleys for a 5mm Dewalt shaft and a 3mm shaft will bend before the belt is properly tensioned. If you go up to an 8mm or larger shaft, then there are many more options open to you.

plan D has a weapon mass of 8kg (or so) ;->
Plan-B is ~2kg Plan-F is ~3kg

btw the mini-EV's are fine at 24 (for certain values of "fine") thats what we ran in Plan-B (i think they were the 300PSI motors) Plan-F is at 22V or so

Plan F certainly spins up fast, but it's using TWO motors and a reduction (about 2 or 3 to 1 ???). I'm still impressed about how you got that huge mofo drum in there and still used 10mm ali plate on the chassis.

I don't know where one would get them cheap, but the winch motors that Arron uses are a pretty good mid sized motor. Longer than a mini EV and with much better brushes.

Yeah, the winch motors rock, I just wish I had a design to use them in!

I just put a few motors on my scales for comparison:

EV Warrior = 1.5Kg
Dewalt 18V drill = 0.47Kg
Pancake fan motor = 0.7Kg
Oatley 100W scooter motor = 1.1Kg
600W brushless scooter motor = 2.3Kg

Based on that, it's not hard to see why everyone liked the EV so much. The power to weight of the Dewalt is hard to beat too, but its hard to get the 18K rpm down to a usable speed without heavy pulleys or gears.

The pancake motor also goes a bit fast at around 10K rpm, but its easier to attach a pulley to. It's still unbeatable in the price/ performance area.

I thought the supply of EV warrior motors had dried up.
I've also been checking out scooter motors (oately) but even the 300W motor is 2kg.

Original EV Warriors have indeed gone and people are jacking the price up for used ones. They can be found in euro cars at wreckers but are pretty rare - I have only found one at Pick n Pay Less. They are marked "Bosch GPB 12V. It has 3 mounting brackets around the can, which makes it easier to mount than the EV version.

If you don't have much time to poke around wrecker's yards, you might ringing around first. If I ever find more, I will put them up for sale here.

anyone got a resonably powerful motor for a featherweight weapon motor theyd like to part with
? I dont live anywhere near a supercheap auto (sad i know) but im lookin around for a good motor say up to $50. Living in small towns sucks.
