Just received two emails simultaneously.
- The waterjet quote is $345.10
- The parts are ready to be picked up from the laser guy.

24 hour turn around and $65 cheaper. Cool

Unfortunately they are closed on Friday, so I need to rush down there between lectures this afternoon.
And then I need to hide it from myself until I finish the assignments that are due next week.

It seems you found a great supplier! How thick is the steel? I was told years ago that as the material got thicker, waterjetting became more cost effective. That might have changed over the years, or perhaps the supplier was just trying to make more money from my job.

Just 3mm mild.
The original design had a mixture of 3mm mild and 6mm bisalloy, but with no work and Connie mentioning the budget word more often I thought I better not drain my bank account too quickly.

Most places will start quoting for the waterjet for 12mm and above wear plate. I think it's 16mm in mild Smile

Interesting - I wonder what the cut-over point is for titanium? Seems to me that lasers probably got cheaper to run over the last few years, while waterjets have stayed the same.

Cool….so are both laser and water just as accurate?

Accuracy. The source of the cutting "beam", light or water will follow the drawing perfectly (give or take a few hundreds of a mm).

Unfortunatly , both get a distinct taper following thickness.
But with water it's a greater angle of dispersion. That is why there is a 2.5D watercutting machine at the firm I work with. If it has to be perfect, they are willing to experiment untill the wished for result is reached.

Unfortunatly, not for free.

That's looking great, nice smooth edges! Meanwhile, The waterjet cutter I use in Sydney has increased their turn-around time to eight days - not impressed. I will definitely swap to laser cutting next time.

+1 for lasercutting when using thin(ish) steels. I have had 1.5-3mm stainless 304 cut in bulk and always been really impressed with the finish. 4mm wear plate (Hardox 450) also lasers very neatly. I see no benefit at all to using waterjet for metals (assuming it can be lasered) at these thicknesses, unless it's a very heat sensitive material.

Well Berserker's saw went together easily. Still needs a few bolts for the casters and a spacer before testing.
