Don't meen to sound like profdfesor Dork here, but a flywheel build's up kinetic energy and releases it throug a tooth mounted on the outer rim. (At least mine.)

Indeed, that's a kinetic energy weapon, the idea being you can store the energy "spinning up" and that all you need do is make contact with the other robot, the energy with transfer to the tooth, and *bang* released instantaneously... However your robot absorbs as much of this impact as your opponent does... its because of this that spinners are so difficult to make properly, and hard to make reliable (ie, not one hit wonder).
I personaly think first robots should not have spinning weapons... there's multiple factors you must take into account...
>Money: Don't think it'll be cheap...
>Time: They take a lot of building, testing and designing to do properly.
>Safety: Basicaly, you'll be spinning up around 2kg worth of metal to thousands of revolutions per minute... do you really want to know what would happen if it all flew off at top speed?
Shocked

By the way, have you build a test bot yet? It REALLY helps you develop the basic skills for building robots, and whilst not exactly strong or pretty, it's such a good feeling when this test plank o wood actualy moves under rc from the first time! And YOU made it, not some chinese sweat shop worker... Laughing

Weight? shouldn't that be variable as you haven't even finished! You shouldn't worry bout weight till u've finished. Then you weight cut.

er... not really...
Basicaly, if you use two drill drives, two 12v battery packs and either no weapon or something *very* small, you shouldnt have a problem fitting it into the featherweight class...
For armour i would recommend for you first bot aluminium and MDF, basicaly because its really easy to make, and easy to repair if you do verse a spinner...
And no, a drill motor won't drive a spinner of any use, unless its a dewalt, and even then, one would be useless for a feather. Smile
