One thing you might need to know if you make a trial part in aluminium (a very good idea BTW) is that carbide bits will often chip an edge in aluminium. I have several chipped Ti bits already and I think it's due to the swarf getting trapped between the flutes and getting recut, which would be particularly likely with that high-helix multi-flute bit in the photo. It wouldbe safer and much cheaper if you used some HSS bits on the aluminium trial part.

The slots for the chain anchors looks tricky to mill - a great place to break a few end mills. Can you use a slitting saw in the CNC mill? It would give you a quick and easy cut and while the bottom of the cut would not follow a precise contour, a saw would be so much easier to use it might be worth considering. Good luck with the milling, its going to be an awesome part!

I think I will go with a test piece before I mill "live". A matter of course, but maybe not out of aluminum.

If you (Nick) look at the first CAD picture I posted you can see slotts that was intended to be milled with a slitting saw. But I abandoned that design for several reasons.

Duct tape... gaffa tape Rolling Eyes

Very Happy If you come down to sydney I'm sure you could find something through our circle of bot builders, plus the many CNC companies here.
Also, you can compete with your featherweight in progress, we tend to have great, regular competitions too. Smile

Yeh, I am really eager to start on my featherweight.
Need to sort out the basics of life first (house & job). It's hard to start from scratch...

A Q, how many builders live in/around Melbourne?

Lots, around 10 active teams (as at robowars last year) things are a bit slow atm, but will pick up I'm sure. we had 5 robots and 2 people currently building at the last battle.

We've got the model engineers expo on in a couple of weeks you should come along and have a look and meet some of us. Also apparently lots of other cool stalls at the expo.

Rob Matt and me {Gary} are down the road an hour from Melbourne in Geelong.
Yes as Neweyn said the model engineer event at Monash would be a good chance to catch up with the Vic builders.

Welcome to Victoria, thought you were going to Qld?
