You are better off building a feather weight first .
The main reason being that there is still no heavyweight class in Aus .

The second is that feathers give you the ability to learn to build with out becomeing overly expensive .Hydraulics and high ke wheapons take some engenering skills to build.especiay for a heavy weight .Although hydraulics would be easier to make in a bigger bot than would be for a feather weight.

I dont want to put you off building just pointing out that if you want to battle your robot you might be waiting a few more years before there is any heavy weight comps in Aus we built ours about 4-5 years ago and it hasnt had a fight yet

I dont know how heavy your wheel chair motors are you could posibly build a light weight 28-30kgs? i think jsut check the rules , but at the moment its a non spinner class which in a way means that you wont have to go up against those types of robots .

Na I don't think I'd be able to do lightweight because the batterys alone would probably be 12kg even without the motors Sad

Heavyweights are hard work, even moving them and storing them, Bulldoze is still sitting in the drive out near the street with a tarp over him after the last outing.
You can build a non KE Ultibot to 50 kg. David is trying to work a deal for a TV show, we have a nice DrWho style Quarry to battle in. Very Happy

Thought I'd also let you know, there is already a "Team Vortex" Smile

http://www.buildersdb.com/view_team_bots.asp?teamid=27

I wanted to use the name "Vortex" for our heavyweight back when Andrew and I got into bots (Nearly 5 years Shocked ) but I found that there was already a bot called Vortex and it was built by Team Vortex Razz So Andrew and I played with some words and came up with "Vertex" instead derived from "VERticle vorTEX" due to the 20kg vertical fliywheel in our heavies design. We've been Team Vertex ever since Cool

I'm sure no one here in Aus will care about using that name, but the guys in the US might be a little annoyed if you do. Maybe send them an email about it? I'm sure they are pretty reasonable guys Cool

On topic Razz

Build a featherweight or build an Ultibot, heavyweights are horrible... Working on them, moving them, lifting them, pushing them are all major efforts, it takes 2-3 people to do anything with them... And there is no competition for them, hence why we have a 80% complete heavyweight jsut sitting in the shed gathering rust Rolling Eyes

Build a featherweight, battle regular and build an ultibot if you want to play in the open world of anything goes Smile

OK
So after checking out the ROBOWARS WIKI I think i over estemated the weight that my robot might be.

I think I'd be looking more towards MiddleWeight 120 lb / 54.43 kg .

After looking at my post last night, I thought to my self that a 50lt beer keg is about 55kg full so I don't think my robot should weight twice that much! Shocked Shocked

Well today I got my scooter motors and the are MASSIVE Shocked .

But I have a little bit of a problem, when I try to power them up they start off really slow and when you think they are allmost ready to stop the get faster and faster.
Plus after I had them running for about 10 seconds the ends of the motors get extremly hot (you can't even put you finger on the back of them),So I dunno if I'm using the wrong batterys or what Confused .

Is there anyone here that has any experience with these types of motors?? because I can't figure out if it's my fault or the motors.

sounds like the motors jammed up internally. possibly in the gearbox if they are the wheelchair motors.

they're efficient motors and wouldnt get hot at all after 10 seconds of normal running. serious problem there lol
