Well it's all back together!



However I've blown another motor This one looks to have melted the fan and then fed it into the brushes which shorted across the comm and shorted the motor out.

I still remember arriving at Sydney for a Battleshed comp (~2008?) and the Sydney guys were belting the steel floor panels back down again, after you and Andrew had test drove you robots and lifted several of them.
I also remember you trying to grind the bottom of your robot to give it more clearance.

As per the BotBitz thread, I tested out the brushless drive in Schmackhed.
The lasted about a minute before the pinion gear began to slip
I swear this robot is cursed to never have a drive train last longer them a few minutes >.>

That's disappointing news! If you know pitch of the pinnion, you could buy some pinnion wire fairly cheaply and make your own parts with a tighter bore. Making them longer than required helps as well and then you also have a unique part to sell on BotBitz.

I'm going to try two quick backyard methods to fix it first.
First up I'm going to try peening the shaft with a pin punch to put a heap of rough points for the pinion to grip with, then apply some loctite and press the pinion on. If that still fails, I'm going to drill a 2mm hole through the pinion and shaft, then press a pin into it. If those both fail, I'll move onto buying pinion stock to fit the shafts better and look at welding or brazing onto the shafts.

Coolest thing about the brushless drive so far, it sounds like a flying car from Doctor Who

The pinion problem seems fixed for now. I have just had the second Turnigy Trackstar 150A ESC arrive, so I'll get onto testing out the brushless drive tonight!

Ah nope, pinion gears slipped on one side again...Will drill and pin them over the weekend as I don't have time to do them tonight. Was nice to drive with the brushless, controllers seem reasonable to use, all thought a full fwd to full reverse is still delayed, but very easy to just make the bot spin on the spot.

Another set of motors to try out in the wedge arrived today.
Turnigy H3736-1000Kv



They have 6mm shafts, so I will lathe them down to make a tight press fit for the pinion gears and hopefully avoid the hassles I've had so far. These motors will also bring the speed of the robot back towards the speeds of the brushed motor config. Will have a shot fitting them during the week and see if they are any good
