Time to dust this thread off and dust the robot off.
Dragging Schmackhed back out for the QLD Non-spinner event. Going to strip all the paint off it (or burn it!) and going to coat the robot in beer and salt for an epic rust job for that junk yard shit heap styling. There are two areas I want to improve on this robot for the season.

Drive: I'm looking at either going to use some simple BotBitz GMP36 drives for an average, reliable drive or I'll look at finishing the BotBitz GMP42 Brushless drives for an fast, over powered but potentially unreliable drive Razz

Weapon: Well it needs a weapon, the wedge is pretty epic in terms of effectiveness, so I'm looking at a simple clamper or lifter add on for the robot (maybe both if made modular).

I know I said this like 5 years ago when I first built Schmackhed, but hopefully I can get it reliable as a simple, plug in and drive robot so I can tinker on another design Smile

We definitely need a reliable QLD robot. The Blues must be beaten this year.

13 months later, and it's back............ Fresh rebuild, fresh name.

KNIGHTROUS WEDGE

Dug this old thing out, zip tied in a 5S 4000mAh lipol, a pair of BotBitz 85A ESC's and bolted a pair of Dewalts onto it (stolen straight out of Annoying Box Rush). All done in a hastily 4hrs!

Only after 8 years, has the drive train finally become reliable and it's actually won something. Only real issue is, speed hasn't picked up despite having the dewalts in it, but it's purely a case of no traction. So while the weight distrobution makes the wedge uber effective, it just doesn't have enough weight over the wheels to make it super fast.

It's ~1kg underweight, so with a smaller battery, a couple of tweaks, I might actually be able to get the weight down enough to build that lifter/clamper.

Hey Aaron could you shove some breadboard under/behind the front, to stop the wedge from catching the floor as much?…..I was thinking of doing this for Avenger One renovations.

That goes against the whole theory of an effective wedge Razz

So why did SchmackHead disappear from the entry list.

I have been expecting some news but curiosity has got the better of me and I am reduced to asking.

Unfortunately I've had a deadline for work brought forward from the 1st November to the 1st of October so will be too busy leading up to the event to attend.

That really sucks! I hope you get a lot of credit at work for the sacrifice.

Ouch! I was thinking you might have been working up to surprising us with OVER9000 or something.
Sad

I've only just retrieved the lathe and milling machine from QLD in the last fortnight, so anything remotely complicated has been off the design tables for the last 12 months. Would like to get back to that design some day, but I think Nick has filled the beater robot quota already.

Yeah, bit of a drag, but I've not really had any "Nationals Quality" robots for a while so it's not like I'd be chasing the title anyway. Maybe 2016?

Hmm now I am thinking about beaters; Not a design I would attempt.

Perfect for Nick as you said.
To make a really powerful beater requires the building techniques he prefers.

A low speed version is possible on the cheap that would work to control an opponent but a drum would do the same job a lot easier.
For bouncing opponents off the roof a VD would be easier and that’s still not easy.
I am thinking designs that could go the distance at a big event not one hit suicide bots.

<Insert story about life happening here>

It's back on the bench baby!

We've got some new drives lined up for it!

It's even getting a weapon!

With this big kahuna size motor to power it!

Sadly had to pull out of the August sportsmen event, but pumped to make up for it by attending Nationals 2019 for the first time in 3 years!
