The HIP chips can do weird things if they get fried. And if a FET goes out, it often takes the HIP driver chip with it.

Look carefully at the Fets where the black plastic case joins the metal tab (just above the Fet body). Look for seperation and little tiny balls of solder. If you find any, that FET is most likely fried.

If the Fets look ok, you can try swapping the HIP chips around and see if the problem follows the chip (ie, swaps to the other side) or not. If it doesnt its the Fets, if it does, its the HIP chip.

Theres a vague possibility it might be the Micro, but its uncommon.

Jason is the man to ask, since he repairs them and is more familair with the symptoms than I am

check the fets before moving the hip chips.
a dead fet can blow a hip, a dead hip can blow a fet.

One of my fets doesn't look to good...

Has anyone got some spare "magic smoke" to put back in?
By the looks of the white powder everywhere, I'm guessing that it was actually on fire, does anyone agree?

definate "mesoplasma formation" there
looks like thats the track inside the fet, Its no longer inside the fet. That isnt a good thing.

Don't know about fire, that seems like it leaves more soot and general blackness around the place. Your definatly out a fet, possibly a hip or 2.
Jaycar is selling the fets now though so you aren't totally screwed.

We went through a few fets before blowing our first hip so you might well be lucky.

Yes there's also a nice sootiness around the place, I think it makes things look worse that they are.

I think I may have done the damage before I got in the arena. You could see that it wasn't driving quite right from the start. It just got worse as the comp went on.

mmm 24V hammer drills @ 48V Twisted Evil

i wouldnt, i would run them around 30 volts tops or maybe 36 but to me thats pushing it for any form of drill motor setup

i will be buying two soon for next feather (slambot lifter) so will look closer myself but in my opinion to be safe go for around 30-36 volts and check ti very often when doing first tests to see how things hold up

fets don't "get worse"
they seem to be standard computing devices having 3 states.
"on off and f#@!$@#$@ed"
i'd say you have a gearbox /drive problem and that cooked your fets due to excess current draw.

On my 15" rim came a bald tire. Now, for compound amour is it metal with rubber on the outside or the other way around?
