Ok well i'm jsut interested in robots at the moment (and probably will be interested in them for all eternity) so i decided i was gonna build myself one. My basic idea is a pyramid shaped body with an axehead or something sticking out the top as the weapon. It'll look like a falcon and all if i get to decorate it but it'll probly just be an axe bot. (CAD designs are on the way) Now i know how to make up the drive system because you guys have that guide on the web page. but how do i get a reliable weapon that's fairly powereful all hooked up to the radio and things like that. I really don't know much so be prepared to explain how to set up the control of my robot in lamens terms.

just one thing with that drive guide, i've found hose clamps a total pain in the a$$, so what you can do is pm Giant Robo about motor mounts, he has made some exelent ones out of ali angle. Good luck and have fun!

perhaps. but i don't think so. I don't really like that design anyway. It's a but ugly. But razer it was sleek and smooth that's what made it awesome. Hey does anyone have any better suggestions for a weapon? because i first thought axe because i want something that can get inside another robot and do damage rather than just dint the shell. I want carnage! ok moving on. suggestions anyone?

At the moment depending on your bot it seems to be either Orbit or Jolt that does the most damage.

Bane just fought both and Orbit did the most damage to bane.

The VD’s are cheaper to build than the Hazard style bar spinners.

We will have to wait and see if Nicks under cutter or beater can dish it out.

Hammer bots don’t normally do a lot of damage and it’s not an easy design to get working.

VD's?? Is that vertical discs? not sure but yeah i was thinking that. but i do like the bar spinners. maybe a bit of a paper scissors rock. no wait better idea. which one is generally cheaper? or if there's any mroe suggestions keep em rolling in!

Vertical discs are cheaper; reliably getting them to self-right is a bit of a problem though.


Horizontal spinners eg plan b and bender are invertible and can still hit hard.

Drums can also do damage and fit in invertible designs.

Jolt doesn’t self right reliably. As judge Dave said you will get flipped.

yep ok. gotcha. i'm gonna go with a vertical spinner then now i think. Unless there is still a better idea out there?

I think maybe a drum might be worth considering? They can be pretty effective and the low diameter means you can use big wheels and overcome the invertability problem faced by most vertical disk robots.

don't know any reason why a vert spinner would be cheaper than a horisontal one.
i think horisontal ones might be easier to build stonger (plan-B style)

Bar spinners are cheaper than disks i think too (unless you use a titanium bar), you can just get any old hunk of steel bar and yer done, disks need to be cut really.

Though $77 for 3 at oxycut seems to work pretty well ;->

What I was trying to say is a Hazard Jolt style bar spinner costs more than an Orbit style VD, a Plan B horizontal spinner is very similar to Orbit.$ wise.

Another design that might be worth considering is a full body spinner.

I would honestly think a full body spinner is slightly out of a new builders league... I'm just trying to make one now, and sourcing parts for it whilst keeping it strong yet underweight is being a real pain. I'm hoping to come across a stainless bottle so I could make something similar to how prancing queen was done, so perhaps if you're lucky enough to find a shell then give it a shot, but it's not a simple robot design!

I would go with a bar spinner, either vertical or horizontal as the bar will ALWAYS cost less than a disk of the same material. The first version of Jolt probably cost less than Orbit - $10 of mild steel for the bar, an EV warrior motor to spin it, drill motors and an IBC etc. Sure, I upsized Jolt over the years, but the basics are still the same...

For my money, a horizontal spinner is a little easier to build, while a vertical spinner is more energy efficient. Have you decided on a budget you want to spend? We can suggest options better if we know how much you want to lay out.
