Team Robort - Bort - NSW

Robot : Caber
Team : Robort
Builder : Courtney/BORT + assistance
Driver : A/A
Class : Featherweight
Chassis/Armour : Steel plate sides, hopefully Titanium front and rear wedges.
Weapon : Sodastream powered 'flipper'/lifter
Drive : Drills
Controller : Undecided ESC of some sort
Batteries : 2400 Nicads
Combat Record : tba
Last Event : tba

Well its time that I announce my intentions of building this robot. At this stage its still just a cloud of imagination. The only part I've collected thus far is the Sodastream and I already had a car door lock actuator.

At the moment I'm researching information about building this, so I've scoured over the information on these forums about sodastreams and also CO2 systems on other websites. I don't consider myself ready to build this thing yet, and I don't expect that anyone else to either. Just thought I'd let you all know now so its not like I just threw it all together. Estimated build date 6-9 months.[/img]

On that note, Andrew/Dumhed I was trying to find some pics of stealths setup. Do you have any that you took? I haven't asked Lindsay yet he might have taken some at Melbourne last year.

I don't have any really good pics of the parts, but there are a few that sort of show how it goes together.

Feel free to come and have a proper look at it in the flesh some time if you like.

Smile Nice.
One thing about the titanium though, if you can afford weight for steel, you may as well go with some good quality steel instead. Titanium is good if you have hardly any weight, but steel tends to take hits better it seems. Smile

Most High Tensile steels will do. Be it tool steel, farm steel, Hardox/Creusabro/xar, Nickel-Chrome-Moly steel. It will do the job.

The problem I have with Titanium is it almost always comes flat and there isn’t a lot you can do about it.

Very limiting design wise; tends to leave vulnerable corners.

Useful for bar spinners and weapon teeth. Sparks impress judges.

Only thing I would use it for is a drum axel.Smile

Thanks for the advice there guys. I'm thinking that weight will be an issue as I'm trying to make that illusive armoured but effective design. That's why i was thinking Ti. Steel for the sides and Ti for the flat wedges. I'd make the flipper wedge recessed. Also Ti is strong but flexible for its thickness, good for ground scraping.

Thanks for the offer Dumhed, I spoke to Lindsay tonight actually. We went scrounging in council cleanup and found some possible steel drums off some treadmills for a drumbot for him. Very Happy

Aaron: Yeah I was thinking i'd go with Glen and your example. Maybe even turn up in a kilt Shocked

Hopefully I can find time to get a Soda stream flipper working fairly soon.

We are using Energize as our prototype, its an old lightweight that finished up playing Cake Taker being built and has been gathering dust ever since.

If your bottler is empty best you swap it over. The new aluminum bottles are a lot lighter and hold more gas.

You probably knew this but otherwise you might have a little more weight to play with than you thought.Smile

Yeah Gary I did know that the new bottles are lighter and hold more. They're also a little longer too. Which is a pain. Would have prefered same or less gas, lighter and same size or smaller.

Just about to go swap the bottle and see exactly how much longer, lighter etc it is.

I thought you were rebuilding ballistic to have sodastream in it?

About 30mm. 1.25kg .85 kg

As Energies was just sitting there and it has heaps of room we decided to get it going first.

Once we are happy with the valve actuation, plumbing etc we can design a new featherweight Ballistic around it.

Energies will be useful for fillers and demos.

The old Ballistic may get an upgrade or it might just gather dust.

Well I'm all ears when it comes to suggestions that you may come up with when you work on Energies. Dumhed has kindly offered some assistance as well, which would be good to examine his system setup up close.

Bloody Big W was swapped out of bottles. And didn't have time to go elsewhere. Thanks for those figures Gary. Now at least I can do some designing.

Did someone do some calculations to work out the flow rate of these things yet?

Not quite Caber related but I'm not starting a new build thread for the other bot. This one will be much quicker. I just did a few tests with the drums from the dumped treadmills today. Tried to film it using my Digital camera but the frame rate of the camera gave a really poor indicator of speed. Here's the pics;

The drum is steel around 60mm dia 1.2kg drum around 400mm long, 400g 12mm shaft. Built in bearings in the end caps. Shaft is tapped with M6 hole on the ends.

Going to use it as a mini mower style bot.

Caber:

Well I managed to get a new bottle from Kmart. They were a little reluctant at first, but managed to convince them into accepting the old bottle.

The new bottle is significantly lighter. It weighs less than the empty old bottle. Gave it a little test with some stuff. Quite impressive thus far. Next thing I need is the solenoid valve. Any ideas?

On another note I'm thinking I'll be needing a speed controller for this bot. At the moment I'm leaning toward the IBC due to its local nature and shipment costs etc. But still looking into it. Basically just need motor control and a weapon firing system.

Drumbot:

Well spent quite a bit of time on this bot the last few days as I've had days off. Mostly planning and designing, but got sick of that and cut some stuff.

This is going to be the frame that goes in retread's old tyre. Its 19mm steel box tubing. Going to buy the Ozito arc welder from bunnings to weld it together. Same price as the GMC but its duty cycle is better at the higher current.

Hopefully will have this bot ready for round 1. Since Lindsay won't be there I'll more than likely drive this as I'm bored of circularr saws Smile
