New builder, Brisbane, looking for comps

Hi everyone, I'm a new builder located in the brisbane region and I'm looking to do some competitions this year.
I've had experience with robotics before (line followers, robotic hand with arm, uni projects, diy electronics etc) but not robowars type robots or the robowars competition. So if anyone has any tips that would be great. I've read rough design tips and gone over the rules but still need a rough idea on what to start with(ex. robot size/tier).

Would a gripper/pincer robot with "excessive" or a lot crushing force be disallowed?

Also what competitions are run in brisbane this year? I see there's one called ICRA, is that one I could look at entering? Also I remember last year there was a robowars competition held at QUT robotronica in August, will that be on this year too, and where do I find info on it?

Thanks everyone Very Happy Very Happy

Robotronica is a bi-yearly event. The Robowars comp in 2 months is part of a bigger conference called ICRA and is part of its arts and robotics track.

See here for details:

No limit on griping or piercing force in either sportsman or open featherweight class.

Thanks for the replies, didn't realise robowars was bi-yearly, but looking forward to ICRA. Also good to hear that there is no limit on gripping/piercing force (my calculations say my design should "theoretically" be able to pierce through 1mm steel. Reading the sportsman rules, it looks like heavy momentum spinners even under 400rpm could be considered "excessive" in force?

Thanks again

spinners are banned as it goes against the nature of sportsman, puncture and piercing weapons are encouraged Very Happy we had one that glen built that was a hydraulic pincer and it worked quite well and could go through more than 1mm of mild steel.
