Myth Busters
How many people have seen Myth Busters on SBS? 7:30 monday nights? If you havn't then you are missing an awesome show.
Basically its 2 speacial effects guys you go around disproving urban myths. For the show I saw tonight they tested the myth that someone has been considered clynically dead, had a funeral, buried and then woken up in the coffen. The went about proving you couldn't survive in a buried coffen by actually putting one of the guys in a coffen with a lot of sensors such a carbon dioxide meter and heart rate moniters, added a night vision camera and an emergency tank of oxygen then buried him in an abrove ground tank that could be quickly disassembled. The bloke chose a steel coffen because it'll be stronger but they only half finnished filling the tank with durt before the coffen started to crush under the weight of the dirt. The guy inside the coffen's heart rate went off the chart. The obversly don't make coffens like they used to.
The second myth was if you fall of a bridge, like the Sydney Harbour Bridge, you will survive hitting the water if a hammer hits the water first to break the surface tension of the water. So they got a crash test dummy, put an accelerometer in its head and then constantly dropped it from a 150 foot high crane into a harbour. The had a cable that the dummy and the hammer ran down so the hammer would always land under the dummy. The first time they dropped the dummy without the hammer first ripped one leg off the dummy. They couldn't find the legs as it must have ended up 5m into the mud under the harbour. The second time ripped the other leg off but the managed to find it. The cast aliminium down the middle of the leg had shattered. In the end the dummy hitting the water without the hammer suffered 270 g's of force, but the one with the hammer only suffered 269 g's!!! Every bone in your body would still be shattered.
Oh and the 2 guys doing the tests were Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, the first guys to be banned from a robot compitition for being too good. Thats right, these guys built BLENDO.
