Nick if you have seen the cases that brett and Jason use for their ibcs get one of them i have managed to fit a small computer fan inside one of these with the ibc it is just beside the heat sink near the regulator and blows the air over under and around the heat sink then vents it through some holes i drilled in the case on the oposide side of the sink i use some ordinary air conditioner filter cloth over the fan and also the vents.this lets the fetts get a flow of cooling air and no crap can get inside them . my other two ibc's are in home made metal cases.

I have been thinking about adding a fan as well as the heatpipes. The pipes are tiny and only weigh 7 grams so its worth trying them - compared to fans there are no moving parts and they are way harder to break. The only downside I can see is mounting and dismountong the IBC will become harder.

There is no room in Jolt for a proper box, so I plan to just make a U shaped cover to fit tightly over the top. the underneath is already protected by a piece of high density foam that keeps out crud really well.

Going on the history of bots like Helios, my opinion is that you will bend the shaft in the first match. Orbit bent a short 12mm hardened steel shaft after just a few hits; we had to go up to 3/4" and support it very well.

Catalyst EVO is using 25mm shafts, I didnt want to risk it bending in the first fight.

Annihilation since version 1.0 has always used a 22mm shaft. Vertex uses a 25mm shaft on it's big bearings and it holds 20kg steady at 2000rpm.

Vertical limits uses a 16mm mild steel shaft suported at either end with rubber mounted bearings .I didnt have any thing stronger at the time and fully expected it to bend so far it hasnt .

Think ill go 16mm now.

The shaft will be welded at the end of the barrel so dose that make any difference?

Is stainless more bend resistent then normal grade steel?

Can stainless be welded to normal steel and if so how well?

Generally, you should weld the same types of steel together. You could probably get stainless and high carbon steel welded, but there could be problems like cracking, poor adhesion, etc.

I would stick with a steel like 4130 for the shafts, it has a higher tensile strength than stainless and is cheaper and more available.

Stainless steel comes in many grades and is generally regarded as being tough rather than strong. By that, I mean that stainless will bend further than high tensile steel before it breaks, but it takes less energy to do the bending.

I was just wondering

If I had a speed controler that had forward and reverse but no brake is there any way to add somthing or do something to it to make it have brakes.

Its for a lifter which just wants to fall down when I lift up something or doesnt hold on when I release the stick.

Prob not possible but who knows.

hey george,

usually the braking is done in the CPU of the controller IIRC, you would most likely have to have a seperate switch mechanism to short the leads of the motor together for braking and then un-short them when you want the motor to move...

more than likely more trouble than its worth.

I thought this would normally be resolved in the mechanics. normally because you need alot of strength a worm gear is used to increase torque/lift/whatever. You can't reverse drive a worm gear (I.e the ouput can't become the input) and so it brakes itself.

JW

I have made a little bec circute and would like to know if i get interference rather then just sticking big caps on the lines can i just ad slightly bigger caps untill the interference gose away rather then putting over sized caps on that arent necicery? "spelling"

My understanding of a cap is is stores electricity and the capacity varies on the size of the cap there for if i have a small cap and the reciever is pulling more power then the cap can staor it wont be able to filter the flow?

Am i right?
