I was refering to the moving bit down the base of the ram. In the CAD there wasn't much contact area between the bit that moves (I don't know what to call it) and the walls. Reminds me a coin sitting in a tube.
Maybe that CAD I'm looking at is too old. Or the design has changed a bit.

lmao woah blast from the past design, Cool works a damn treat too.

wrt to the valve the keros are right. you should only need about 100psi to push that plate up and keep the ram retracted. once you vent the pressure behind the disk, the 1000psi on the other side will force the valve open, so theres really no point in wasting gas on the other side of that valve.

and dont think there would be any issues with the plate over such a short travel and i doubt there would be any twisting considering the forces would be equal acting on it. and even if it wasnt, would probably not be able to move enough to bust itself over the 10mm travel or what not.

My answers,
the CAD what is shown is not what i'm building. I simplified the idea lot, and made it more redundant. Patenting it is not done, it already is public domain.

The contraction of the inner wall- 5mm thick, will be minimal compared to the tolerance on the O-rings I use.

The shuttle, meaning the bottom of the ram, what is "dropping" when the pressure behind it is releaved, will be "higher" as what is drawn, to avoid going slanted and block itself. 2 Orings will make sure no leaks occure. Rotating when shut.... have fun achiving that with 1500 kg keeping it shut.

The bottom plate is 12mm thick ali of good grade, secured with 12 M5 bolt 8.8 or 10.9 grade. I doubt it will budge, even after a good hit.

But for me this is a new one. So I hope all goes as I feel it need to go. Otherwise I'll invent something else.

Yeah it is a little familiar. I think with a different goal in mind though so the details are different.

OK guys, I can't quite get my head around this combined high flow ram/buffer design. Could someone draw me a basic design in paint(or similar) to help, thanx.

It's much the same principle as a spud gun ......

That is probably one of the best explanations of the system I've seen so far. Thanks for the link Woody.

Thanks guys, I get it now. I'm going to try to put one together this weekend with PVC(a ram with a piston not a spud gun).

So the buffer camber would still need to be about twice the volume of the piston camber?

Normally open 3/2 valve.

Now I just need to get my LED lit piston rod fitting in there to. Very Happy

Make your buffer chamber as big as is practical.....

There's more than one way of constructing the valve .....but the principle is the same.

There's also 2 possible versions at the bottom of my pneu page

Ahh great. Yes, the diagram on your website(the one on the left) was the design I came up with when I put pencil to paper. This is the construction I'm going to give a go, with low pressure and PVC.

Take a look at spud guns.
thats where i got the idea from.

we have moved away from that system though, something more mechanical.

I just did a bit of math, and the benefits of full pressure Co2 for me are ideal.

I would still get 7 to 8 shots out of a ram with a 1 inch bore and 1.5 inch throw @ 800 psi, with a 16 gram cartridge. This ram would have the same force as the larger low pressure one I use now. With the smaller ram I should be able to fit the buffer tank and ram(as one component) into the same size/area as my previous low pressure ram.

Of course this will not be made out of PVC.

Have I missed anything? I would appreciate any more design info, on these type ram/buffers.
