They are all pretty much the same in the under $50 bracket and probably come from the same Chinese factory. I would just look for somewhere having a sale _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

They're actualy really hard to find now...
We used to be able to get an 18v for $22 or so on sales, but can't think of anywhere that still stock them at any where near that price! _________________ ( •_•)
I saw 14.4V ones at crazy clarks the other day for $15.
They are all exactly the same cheap stuff. _________________ Steven Martin

Most of the cheap ones have identical gear boxes and motors the disc smith ones have a slightly stronger gear box and all steel gears and the quality seems consistent but their motors do not like being over volt-ed.

I have had a lot of success mating the better DSE gearboxes with the XU1 18v motors but this wouldn't be an option for most. Yet to blow one up though... _________________ ( •_•)
Thanks angus and thanks guys, I think I'll go the DSE. Anyone got a few XU1 motors laying around ?

someone posted on the forum that the DSE where discontinued but they seam to be back in stock at most places now. and at $30. i smoked one of the motors first event but the gearbox is going strong. Mine though are andrew mod that i beleve adds even more gearbox streangth.
I got a few of the maxi's from kmart for $13 each a month or 2 back both speed and tourque are way down on the dse but they are only 14.4v. 550rpm vrs dse 900.
DSE's new 18v is $10 temperarly at $40 (and only $10 more then the origonal blue dse 18v which are $30) but it is dual gearbox. i would love to know the speed and torque for each of the 2 settings but they only seam to give maximums.
last i was at bunnings u could get a UX1 14.4v for $30 i think it was.
slightly highjacking with a noob question or 2. would going up to a $50+ drill be of much advantage in anyones opinion? or woudnt they be worth it till u get upto the rearly good drills near the deWalt range? and would they draw more current then the cheaper ones (on average) and be bad for the IBC.
And Andrew do u still do mods on the gearboxes?
Thanks

Most of the single speed drills use exactly the same gearbox or a close copy of it, I have never seen one that was notably better than the others. Dual speed gearboxes are not really good value as you will only be using one of the speeds and it probably adds more parts to break. The motors might be a little better / larger in the more expensive drills but again, there isn't much difference except in the voltage rating.
The main difference is in the quality of the batteries and the charger, plus 'percieved value' in the more up-market names. For bot use, I would go with either the cheapest drill and plan to replace it often, or go straight up to DeWalts withthe Team Delta mounting kit. Plan B would be to use Banebots gearboxes for $50 each. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

The GMC 2-speed drills have some beefy Johnson motors rated for around 500watts according to the Johnson Website. Andrew managed to get his hands on a few from a secondhand shop for like $8 each. 14.4v and 18v models, all metal gears.
Slightly OT, I was happy with the performance of the Dewalt 14.4v drills bolted onto Andrew mods, Just welding the face plate to the can is a recommend mod, but it's not exactly a hard one _________________ https://www.halfdonethings.com/

Any suggestions? short of belting the hell out of it with a hammer?

put the whole setup in a vice, tighten a right angle allen key into the chuck and bash it with a hammer and it will spin off.
