The Wonderful World Of XU1's

I got bored a few weeks ago and came up with this:

Getting the most out of your XU1 Drill.

The XU1 drill sold at Bunnings Hardware for $18.89 is a plentiful source of robotics parts. But how plentiful is it exactly?

o Disassemble the XU1 NiCD charger box, there are two LED’s with matching resistors for 12v, perfect for those chasing LED’s for there power lights. Also unsolder all resistors, diodes and plug connectors off, as these are a great way to save you driving to the local rip off merchant (Jaycar, DSE) for these fine parts when you have them for free!

o The 12v 400mAh main power adaptor that connects to the charger, slightly modified by removing the end plug and fitting the appropriate plug, you can then power your Transmitter off mains power via the charging jack on the side of most common radio gear. Never have to worry about leaving the transmitter on before the next battle.

o Remove the XU1 drill trigger from the drill casing and use it for a home made 12v 15amp current limited speed controller. For under $50 you can have a complete set for your robot and be off bashing it around with the best of them. It’s not quite the IBC, but it’s the next best thing!

o Remove the NiCD cells from the plastic casing and use them for bench testing of for even driving your robot with the 15amp XU1 HM drill trigger speed controllers. You can cut the packs up into smaller packs; parallel and even series packs together! They might only be cheap cells, but they are under $20, perfect price for the scrooge builders in the robot community.

o Use the plastic drill cases that you removed the batteries from to mount your XU1 Drill Trigger controllers into, protecting them from dirt and grim while making it easier to mount them into your robot!

o Use the plastic molded cases from the whole drill as weapon testing subjects, use them as a cradle when the Event Organiser is not paying attention or even put the screws back in them and give them to the kids to use as a speed camera, see how many cars slow down at your place when the kids are standing out the front pointing it at random speeding cars.

o Use the drill motor for a drive motor in your featherweight and mount a Red Wheel on it for a complete drive. Can also be used for a low budget spinning weapon motor.

o Steal the mosfets off the drill triggers and make your own electronic speed controllers.

o Buy them for $18.99 and sell them to your unsuspecting friends for $50, a great way to save up for your IBC. *note: Don’t include a warranty!*

o Use the chuck from the motor and gearbox as a spinning flail, giving your opponents a good dose of “crappy cast”

o Remove the drill motor, leaving the battery, casing and trigger all together and mount a 50watt halogen light in the hole in the front of the casing where the motor use to be. Then you have a complete variable light gun!

o Remove the drill battery and externally wire up a 15Amp SLA, this gives you a great amount of working time before charging up the battery and really gives the motors the power to drill 10mm aluminium.

o Just open the box and use the XU1 for it’s original purpose………. Drilling….
