chose EMC cos i like linux. It seems like a better choice with hard realtime additions to the kernel. I am running the servo thread at 5Khz. I dunno about mach, never used it. _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets

What made you decide to use the quill for the Z axis, rather than locking the quill and moving the entire head? I figured that was why you got the more expensive square column mill...

I don't think you can use ball screws with a manual mill Nick, it wouldn't hold its place when machining. _________________ Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.

LOL, that's what the slide locking screws are for! I generally lock the axis I'm not traversing in to make the milling table more rigid.

we were debating it, but the whole head is somewhat heavy, and somewhat more wobbly than just the quill. We are planning on doing a whole head replacement with a spindle drive system using one of our motor wheel style motors so that you have the torque to tap things but still have the speed to do high speed stuff.
wrt ballscrews and manual mills, you need to lock the axis when you aren't driving it on a manual mill just because otherwise that axis will just bounce around in its backlash. _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets

Oatley Electronics motors? the 500 watt ones? _________________ Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.

Also how are you controlling the motors. I assume since you mentioned a thread running at 5kHz I assume you are running it on a PC. How are you communicating with the drivers. Serial or some form of custom interface? _________________ Steven Martin

Sorry to dig up an old thread but are you using some form of encoder on the motor output to determine how far it has moved?.
