What would 3 mm steel weigh? 35+kg? Is there an advantage to steel as opposed to wood? _________________ So even the rain that falls isn't actually going to fill our dams and our river systems

Steel is cheap, lasts forever and flat.

I have no objection to a steel floor.
I would just like it to be flat. I would also like the push out zones. Perhaps a steel floor around 900 x 900 could be placed in the centre of the arena. This could be surrounded with polycarbonate walls 150 mm high. The first 40 mm might have to be steel so that it will survive the spinners. Sections of the wall could drop out by remote control after two minutes.

Magnets in ants pretty much makes all lifters/flippers useless.

I have an upgrade idea for the ant arena.
1.2m x 1.2m x 12mm MDF sheet with L-Grooves cut into the corners to match the current ali L-Bracket so it can neatly slide into the current arena. Add 150mm high blocks between the old floor and the new floor to raise it up. This has three advantages:
- No Seam in the floor
- Makes it easier to grab the robots through the lid as the floor is closer.
- We can add a pit.
For the pit I was thinking a 150mm square hole cut along one edge mid way between the red and yellow squares. Keep the cut out part and reattach it with a hinge and add a small stick to hold it up when the pit is closed. Cut a hole in the polycarb wall under the floor and below the pit, probably 150 square again, to allow access to the stick and robots that have fallen in. We could then put a pit button on the opposite side to the arena. That would just be a sticker on the wall and when the referee sees a robot touch the sticker he/she would pull out the stick propping up the pit, robot wars style. That way it is up to the builders if the pit is used or not and makes it more interesting to watch. And easy to make.

I tried to buy a bit of 1.2m x 1.2m wood yesterday but it wouldn't fit in the car. Would I still get complaints about two bits of 1.2 x 0.6m bits joined together?
