Can you weld scooter motors?
Its really hard to keep Judge mental's scooter motors from loosening then the chains fall off...very annoying(cause there is only two 5mm bolts that attach it and that is only into aluminium...so i'm thinking of welding a mounting plate on the bottom of the scooter motors so they don't move.
Steve mentioned that the magnets might need to be re-glued if I weld onto the outside. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I'm dead sure Gary used to weld all of his motors Just take out the magnets and weld the can then smack em back in with some glue and all should be well. _________________ www.demon50s.com - Minimoto parts

I think the heat from the welding might demagnetize the magnets.
But I agree, I hate face mount scooter motors and chains

Yeah I guess the question, is how hard is it to remove the magnet before welding?...if its just glued with contact adhesive..then it should be able to be pried out ..welded then re-glued...hopefully. _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

Easy from recollection, I think they literally just slide out and aren't glued in to start with. Just cover the magnets in tape when you take them out. So so annoying trying to get all the swarf off them again _________________ www.demon50s.com - Minimoto parts

ok ....these suckers are glued in with epoxy.....I couldn't get the magnets to budge so i welded it with the magnets in there
....and you guessed it the magnet on one side shattered....so lucky I have a spare motor....how to get the magnet out? What do ya reckon about heat gunning it till the epoxy glue melts then hopefully sliding it out? _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

I spent 6 hours gluing shattered magnets back into a scooter motor for Huntsman during RoboGames. An absolute bugger of a job and if you have a spare I wouldn't try it unless you are bored.

It was a pretty bad shatter... and I chucked the magnet bits into the bin....and annoyingly the (several spare) 24v motors have totally different sized magnets...so I cant rob them...so had to take apart a perfectly good 12v scooter motor..oh well....there was no glue residue left after welding...must be a really thin layer holding them in position....so will attempt a serious heat gunning ...and if that fails....map gas......have to get that magnet out _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

Be careful. Heating up magnets wrecks them. _________________ Steven Martin

ehow reckon acetone disolves epoxie along with a bit of heating...will give it a soak first if that doesn't work ..will try epoxy thiner. _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

When I have to weld stuff with heat sensitive parts, I wrap the heat sensitive parts with wet towels.
In this case, if magnet removal ain't an option, I would stuff the body with wet towels and TIG weld* the part with as high as possible amps to make the heat imput very localised and as short as possible.
A BBQ temperature meter to make sure the temp doesn't go over the set limit.
Time is another of my friends in this kind of situations.
* I prefer TIG welding, , just because it's what I do best.
