So I am strongly considering sinking some cash into a proper lathe.

Real question is http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/L148
or http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/L149

While I could potentially afford something like http://www.machineryhouse.com.au/L141 I think this is getting beyond what I can acceptably have in a rental property which means I have the prospect of moving in the next 1-2 years, potentially interstate as well.

Any other suggestions welcom. I have been tossing up between this and the Mig/Tig/Plasma but think lathe really has more benefits.

Steve

Get the 320, getting something smaller when you have the money is a giant false economy.

Putting my c6 lathe on the stand was a nightmare with just jake and i, but a year or two ago i totally stripped it and moved it around single handedly. Tis not that hard. Certainly not if you use your rentals trailer to get it around Razz

Welder is a must have, but you can already weld stuff together, albeit only stick Razz and your dad can weld stuff proper, thus, get the big lathe ;D

Get a lathe so big that you can't move interstate.

I have a philosophy for tools
Get lots of cheap crap then if you break it get the best thing you can afford because you know you use it.

For machine tools it becomes
Get the biggest and best you can afford and fit, its going to be with you for a long time.

Also I guarantee the first job you want to do on it will be too big ;->

Enjoy! 4 jaws for a long time seem like a pain in the ass to setup, but when you get a good gauge setup, then the 3 jaw is pretty much a paperweight.

Question for Nick, i got your old drill press off Andrew, Any idea how the spindle pulley attaches to the spindle itself? It just seems to rotate on it without much resistance. Theres a huge nut on top but it seems to be decently tight. Could there perhaps be a keyway broken in there? Can't do too much with it till i go find a socket massive enough lol.

Wow, I didn't think it was possibly to break that part! I think there is a keyway but I was never able to shift that huge nut. I happen to have a giant wrench to fit the nut if you want to borrow it.

Might not help but mine has a set screw in the pulley and it came loose several times this weekend... was wondering why it was 'stalling' so easy... Laughing

All those Asian clone drill presses are basically the same; there must be some on-line drawings for one of them...

Can a drill chuck centre be machined? I am interested in having it fit inside a bearing for support.
