I was just looking at all the cool gear sizes available in 123design as premade models. I want to build a gearbox that i can 3d print….that makes a motor spin at 2rpm. Now how do i work this out?

First step is to work out how fast the motor / gearmotor is spinning already Razz you could probably do this with your camera gear if you can get a high enough framerate, using a bit of black tape or disk with a dot.

Spur gears are dead simple to work out ratios, double the teeth = double the reduction. Planetary and others are harder to work out, for a crazy high reduction consider a hypocycloid they're pretty damn cool. Razz http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:19649 There's a few on thingiverse, no idea if they're any good though! You could easily get 2rpm with one and a stepper motor + driver + arduino.
