Well, I am just starting to create my first combot, and when I asked people they have different opinions on what I should do right now. Some said I should first find a competition and reserve a place, and other said I should first have the bot built to get into an event...
Can anyone help me on that? I'm really confused.

Non of both.
Go and have a look at a live event, you can find those in
this section
Talk to the roboteers, it will help you greatly.
Read the build diaries, and/or use the search function of this forum to get the information without reading a gazillion pages.
The people you asked were thinking about getting on TV, and that's a lot easier if you have something to show.

You don't need a bot already built to register for an event, but it's a good idea to start thinking about designs and at least mocking something together. If they do start getting insect (antweight or beetleweight) events going in NSW they're a great place to start cos you can throw designs together (relatively) cheaply and throw them into competition. Featherweights take a bit more time and money but you can make a less-competitive but functional feather in your garden-variety shed and then take it to one of the bigger events (I'd recommend starting with a sportsman event). You'll find though that your design will change significantly as you attempt to build it and you find what works and what doesn't.
My (inexperienced) suggestion: read all the build threads you can, come up with a rough design using cheap(ish) bits and start trying to build it, then register for the next event you can get to.
