Hover craft ant?
Hey guys
Thinking about whether anyone has built a hover craft ant using a cpu/graphics fan as propulsion?(theres some cool how-to vids online) Would that be classed as a cam-less driven design and if so would it let you have double the weight?
I know if would slide around all over the arena, but it you had double the weight imagine some massive flipper arm on it! So when the other ant pushed you into a corner you could use that force to flip them.

Tech rules
Describes Non wheeled as 'Non-wheeled: non-wheeled robots have no rolling elements in contact with
the floor and no continuous rolling or cam operated motion in contact with the
floor, either directly or via a linkage. Motion is “continuous” if continuous
operation of the drive motor(s) produces continuous motion of the robot.
Linear-actuated legs and novel non-wheeled drive systems may qualify for this
bonus. [Contact this event with questions on weight bonuses to see if your
robot may qualify.] .'
but bellow in the same subheading lists hovercraft separably
you could argue hovercraft fits the above definition of non wheeled.
Then there is this in red so EO decision ' [There is a 100% weight bonus for non-wheeled bots.]'
Would be good to see anyway as a demo/filler if you guys decide to build it.

I did have an idea to increase traction in an ant with over-powered drives by using an EDF (electric ducted fan) from an RC 'jet' plane facing upward. Apparently whatever 30-something millimeter / low weight one i was looking at, would produce 100g of thrust. Effectively making your ant weigh 250g.
A magnet on a steel floor undoubtedly works better - unless your floor is chipped up all over the place due to someone with his drum bot ruining it <.< _________________ <Patrician|Away> what does your robot do, sam

you would probably get much more "traction" with a skirt and that fan
think reverse hovercraft.

Thats how the F1 cars were heading till they banned them.
Have to admit though, that magnet wedge i made for the last event drove so so awesome on a smooth steel floor. The wedge just killed it in the chunked up arena. magnet bricks would make for a totally awesome featherweight if we had steel floors! _________________ www.demon50s.com - Minimoto parts

I remember reading in the rules that flying robots have been banned. I still don't know how that happened or why. I have been thinking hovercraft too. _________________ Get Some!!!
