We can rule out the switch- actually could it just be the cpu fan? I unplugged the fan and power seemed to stay on- still mothing on graphics though😭

If the fan was turning it shouldn't cause a problem. If you unplug the fan the computer probably thinks its broken and is not allowing the CPU to do much to avoid overheating, so it may stay partly powered up but will never boot. are there any PCI cards plugged in and if so what happens when you remove them?

i unplugged everything really no pci cards at all (graphics is built in)….the only think plugged in is the cpu, cpu fan, power supply and a stick of ram.

The ram that it came with didn't fit…someone had it two sticks of it just sitting in the slots not pressed in (because it doesn't fit) Shocked The ram i have in there does fit but i haven't checked to see if its the right specs…but i can't see ram making the cpu fan do that? Do you still get an image on screen if the ram is wrong or not plugged in?

No RAM or incorrect RAM generally means the PC isn't going to start the POST (power on self test). In a PC using built-in graphics the RAM is also used as video memory so any RAM issues are automatically going to take out the graphics.

If some idiot tried to use the wrong RAM, they might have damaged the sockets trying to force it in.

Righto i will see what the specs are and see if the ram is wrong spec….the slots look fine…it was just sitting in the slot rather than wedged.

but I'm thinking this ram thing wouldn't make the fan do that right?

Indirectly, yes it can. The first thing the PC does when it powers up is start the POST. If something major fails the test, the POST routine could be doing a hard reset and that might well involve powering down all the fans.

btw, that ram looks like its in the wrong slot.
*generally* they fill from the slots closest to the CPU.

These (or similar) are super handy for this kind of thing btw, port 80 card.

HDD light plugged in backwards I have seen cause problems like this too, unplug all the wires to the front from the MBO and turn it on by shorting the pins on the MBO the switch uses with a screwdriver (just touch it, it'll also help rule out a dud switch).

Hi guys yep tried unplugging all the wires and shorting the start pins but still does the on and off thing so weird. that little pci plug tester is a brilliant idea Very Happy

I've tried the ram in both slots….always does the same thing…might be a parts only box this one. Sad

WIN 10

I upgraded my laptop from Win 8.1 t o10 today and so far I'm really liking it, plus the upgrade process was completely painless. I am a bit worried about upgrading the main desktop system running Windows 7 though - has anyone tried that yet?

does a bluetooth mouse now work properly? They seem to have major issues with lag in 8.1 (and don't work at all on win7!)

Yeh I did it really didn't feel much different from windows 8.1. If a bit more of a step back towards a more 7. Few more interesting things like the 3D printing integration which is cool.

The mouse is a Logitech M557 model with Bluetooth 3. I haven't noticed any lag, perhaps a serious gamer would. I have a Sony all-in-one PC with Win 7 and a bluetooth mouse; the PC has plenty of other issues but the mouse always worked OK. Perhaps that one will be my next upgrade.

I've used bluetooth mice in win7 without issue.

The big thing seems to be the bluetooth stack, the windows stack is ok if it works with your chipset, the vendor stacks are much more variable. some are good, some are very bad.

yeah my Dell XPS13 will pair with the mouse but you can't move the pointer with it.

The 8.1 laptop is an Asus X205 and the bluetooth mouse works fine unless you're in a web browser (any browser), in which case it's basically useless.
Considering it's basically a "netbook" - it's a bit of a problem!

Strange, I never had a problem with my XPS13. Perhaps its time to test out a different brand of mouse?
