the coarsair stuff is typically *much* more expensive though
2x 256mb coarsair sticks $165 (twinx pack)
2x 256 apacer $96
(58% more expensive)
for 135 you can get 1gb dimms ;->

I'm going the Corsair because of the lower latency. Price is marginal to Kingmax. I'm getting 2Gb of Corsair for just under $250

The beetle cooler is pretty much just for wank factor Razz It gonna look sooooo cool with a mini gas turbine inside!

The graphics card. I was thinking about changing to changing to a 6600, but the price of over $300 is to nasty. Maybe a X600PRO for $179 will be better.

Is there a cheap way to have very fast hard disk storage for a lap top.

I want to get a lap top for video editing. I have a quote that includes a LaCie d2 External Hard Drive 250GB (7200rpm, 8ms, 8MB) for $360 plus tax. I often fill about four times this amount of space.

Should I put more storage in a desk top and store projects that aren't in use onto the desk top? Is there a more cost effective storage solution that is still portable?

If you want fast laptop storage, the way to go IMO is firewire 800 attached RAID, although this might drag the price up a bit.

You could try something like this http://www.cooldrives.com/newulrafi800.html for 139USD (granted its only software raid, but these days the CPU's dont even see it, and as long as you dont need to use it on an unsupported OS, all is good) , add to that a pair of Maxtor 300GB hard drives from MSY for $175 each, and you have 600GB of very fast storage for about $530.

If your laptop doesnt do firewire 800, chances are it will do the slower firewire 400, even if it doesnt have firewire at all, you can always just get a cheap firewire PCMCIA card like this for cheap. http://www.firewiredirect.com/firewire/products/cardbus.shtml

The quote includes LaCie FireWire 800 PCMCIA card (2 ports).

That looks like what I am after. Thanks, Nightshade

you better off with a desktop for video editing, price/performance desktops always win.

heck $700 gets you a p4 3Ghz with 200gb hdd.
a simmilar laptop would be like $3000
laptop is bad for storage

spend $3000 get a kick ass desktop and an ok laptop

The other good thing about a desktop is u can run multiple monitors.
Have been using twin screens for over a decade. It makes a huge difference.
And possibly a dedicated TV monitor added to that and u are pretty set for easy editing

@George: Dual monitors/screens is great. I usually use my 51cm TV as my second monitor so I can watch DVD's and robot videos while I'm surfing the net or chatting on msn.

@Philip: I agree with Jake, get a decent desktop. You can build a pretty powerful video editing computer for under $1200 from MSY parts and have it rocking out the box.

I can get a good desk top with two monitors for $1000 dollars less than the comparable laptop with no extra monitors. I like the portability of the laptop.

This is the one I like http://www.boxxtech.com/products/2300.asp

With a 3.8ghz processor and a Nvidia 6800 Ultra GFX card, it's more of a portable oven which means battery life will probably suck. If your into gaming, that's probably a nice laptop if your always on the hop from LAN to LAN.

I am intending to go for for the 3.2 G processor, 2 G of ram and the NVIDIA Quadro Graphics.

The computer is primarily for video editin. It will mainly be used where AC power is available. Alex will probably game on it. We will have to get a router to LAN the three computers.

Just wondering if i can get a laptop card that i can use with a 2.4ghz wireless color camera?

Saves having to plug one in and all wires and crap.

I have my laptop NLE, as mentioned above, with a Lacie 500 G external drive and Mojo.

I would like to mount the three items into one case so that I can open the case, turn it on and start editing or recording. I have to plug in three power supplies, two cables and a dongle before I can start work. Can external drives be mounted horizontally? What should I do about shock mounting and extra cooling. As Aaron said, it is an oven. I guess an aluminium case 600 mm wide and 250 mm tall would hold everything.

Has anyone seen or tried something like this?

Hi Philip, have done something similar before for a standalone terminal but it could be used for a laptop and stuff easy.
What I have tried is using road cases made out of tuff moulded plastic which is very light and tuff.
These cases are generally 19 inches accross internally and have different heights.
The front and back panel clip off so u can access your stuffeasy and u just add shelves, lights or even fans as you like.

The cases I have are from a company called SKB if u wanted to do a search.
For a laptop if you wanted it to be usaeble from withing the case u might be better off with a large microphone case so you just llift the lid, remove it if u like and start working.
You could have all your power leads connected internally so you only have one plug to worry about
Anyways it might help to check out what is being used at concerts. They look pretty cool as well, like something the military would use for weapons.
It might also give you some building deas if u wanted to make one your self.
