The reclaimer (the big thing with the wheel) works automatically to pick up dirt, put it onto a conveyor and send it back to fill in the hole left by the mine. Since the thing is basically on awesome robot if you park a bulldozer in its path it will reclaim it too.

Apparently the opperators saw it was going to happen and couldn't shut it down in time. They just had to watch it happen.

Did I say it happened in Australia? Looks like a yankee thing to do.

Actually the e-mail that arrived to work about it said it was up at Gladstone. But one of the guys here said it didn't really look like Gladstone though.

You can tell by the cars in the background that the photos are from Aust. unfortunately - because it is a typical yank thing to do...

Just tried, the cars arn't high enough quality to get either the steering wheels, or anything from the number plates. Sorry, but seriously if that was in australia you would have heard about it, the australian media wouldn't have let someone get away with that

lol im amazed the excavator had enough force behind it to rip that far into the bridge! Shocked
*continues planning kinetic energy weapons* Laughing

just looking at it, it didnt "rip through" the bridge.
the hand rails on both sides are intact.

it looks like it clipped the underside of the box section (they are hollow yaknow) that pushed the arm back and up which punched through the deck.
conversly it pushed the bed down "a bit" ... you can see the "flat" bed isnt quite so flat anymore

either way the driver of the truck would have experienced a sudden stop.

Keep in mind KE = 1/2 M V^2
its the V^2 bit that gets ya

nah, its a = (v^2 - vo^2) / 2sg that really hurts.

a = acceleration, v=final velocity, vo=starting velocity, s=stopping distance, g=gravity constant (9.8m/s/s)

Or, put more simply. Speed (energy) doesnt kill, its the sudden stop (deceleration) that hurts and turns people into pink splats.

Or put another way, off-ramps are fine, brick walls (or concrete bridges) = ouch
Razz

Most of our robotic combat is about rapid transferal of energy into the opponent (deceleration) in an attempt to break something.
