Hmm interesting concept. I've obviously come into this conversation alittle late Embarassed but if you were going to use scooter motors at 24v or less, you could try drill trigger controlers, wired in parralel to allow more amps. I know they can actualy handle a fair amount because jeff ran the axecutioners (i love that robot!) weapon using a drill trigger, and it was a 300w scooter motor at 24v! Correct me if i'm wrong jeff!

But if i did end up making a narcart which i really want to do, i'll probably try the commercial scooter controlers! Very Happy One per motor, your sweet! Hmmm, 4 300w motors... Smile
Whats funny is andrew bought an rs-80 for the same job. Very Happy

got rd80d because what im maiking isnt something u can push manually, itsa rc project.

Contenplated using some crazy speed controller thing either drill trigger setup or whatever but too fiddly, flimsy ortoo unsafe andunaccurate (dont want 100kg plus going outa controll and crushing some kid now do i.

finding motors and controllers and batterys isnt the hard part.

The hard part is building the kart to go reasonably fast and get a decent runtime.

So far looks like if i can manage to pick up a good working lawn mower motor at least about 4hp then i can buy clutches to fit to them for $20us plus postage and a way i go.

A good ol Victa 125cc lawn mower with a hori-vert belt combination would work well. you could make a clutch system that is just a tensioner that pulled the belt onto the drive pulley and away she goes. Andrew did this with his kids gokart and it worked damn well, until some of us bigger kids decided to open the throttle up a bit more and burn ourselves with exploding exhaust piping...... *long story...*

How about a pocket bike engine? I saw one on ebay the other day for $70.

Not enoughf power for a go kart.

Im looking for something fairly powerfull for the big wheel i have in mind for it something that can go up hills in bumpy paddocks over sticks and bumps and small logs and things.

my plan is when i get unlazy -

two bunnings trolleys
2 300 watt scooter motors from oately
2 350watt oatley speed controlelrs and throttle
the sprockets and chains from oately

pull off two wheels from the trolleys, jam the trolleys together side by side with the two remainign wheels on the ouside and use two spare on the front with steering.

One scooter motor per rear wheel

SLA's for power

an overdrive switch that bypasses the speed controllers and gives 48v direct to the motors for extra boost power

and thats about it

maybe a seat too Razz

yes a seat is qyite handy

WIth the inflatable wheels that come with them trolleys all u need to do to mount the sprockets is take outthe bolts which hold wheel together and get longer bolts that fit through them. Then drill the small holes that already come on sprocket a little larger so bolt fits through them ( u want stuff snug so nothing wobbles) then get aluminium tube that fits over bolts as spacers, cut spacers to lengh so sprocket sits on them a little above wheel to give chain clearance, then when u tighen up nuts itll clamp sprocket to spacers and u have one wheel ready to go

If anybody wants i have pics as i had to do 4 of them for metalwork project.

I just came across these on ebay;
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/DC-Electric-Motor-18v_W0QQitemZ7544790594QQcategoryZ4660QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
No wattage mentioned but they seem pretty beefy at a 4.5a draw it says. Its pretty pricy at $100 but as no one seems interested on ebay you can do some sort of haggle thing to get them for a lower price or included shipping etc.. Smile
$70 would be pretty good i think, $35 per motor aint bad!

Oh and if anyone IS interested I shotgun one! Laughing

I recognise those motors as as ex-mainframe tape drive motors. They would be designed to run 24 x 7 but not put out much power, plus they are way over priced IMHO. The Oatley 300W motors are a superior dollar per watt deal and they are easy to use in multiples to increase the power.

The other cheap option would be fan motors if you can get them for $5 each and use 3 or 4 per side. They would be trickier to mount and attach a sprocket to...
