Put simply, unless you're a nerd , I wouldn't advise taking on this project. I don't want to put you off, but unless you have an unexplainable passion for computers, I don't think you would have enough motovation to complete the project. You would need to know computer hardware in detail, computer software in detail and linux in detail.
I know a lot about half-finished projects, I'm start them all the time .

linux isn't that hard. I know a few guys that have put on their laptops. It's actually pretty good. nice and simple.

you know people on here dont you?
plenty of people here use it.
as a matter of fact i got it now.
fully fledged OS in the bot probably not what you want unless its doing the heavy lifting in terms of processing (ie video camera based driving or some such)
We run 900 mhz radios from maxstream and a PIC micro (no not a picaxe, no diet stuff here) in the bot.
I am going to try moving the radio software to linux and python/SDL for the future. _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets

nah i don't really know people here at all. I was looking to come down to the last meet at sidetracked and grab a look but i jsut couldn't get down there. went go karting instead But yeah a full fledged OS is generally not something you want inside something potentially destroyable.

Let me try my post again.
Learning things like linux, programming and computer hardware are all good things. I would advise to take each one separately, so that you know where things may have gone wrong. If you try to do too many foreign things at once, and something doesn't work, troubleshooting could be difficult.
i think i might just get proper r/c gear of ebay but i will wait untill i go back to skool and ask my IT teacher if he knows how to do all of those things _________________ WHEN YOU GO TO COURT YOU'RE TRUSTING YOUR FATE TO TWELVE PEOPLE

You know if you're really on a tight budget an AM 2ch can be had for around $50 new these days... Sure, it's crappeh, but having a spare controler on hand is always usefull for side projects and after getting your antenna ripped out checking if your spensive reciever is dead! _________________ ( •_•)
well my robot needs a 5 channels so i thaught this might be cheaper than a radio set _________________ WHEN YOU GO TO COURT YOU'RE TRUSTING YOUR FATE TO TWELVE PEOPLE

what if you got an old computer, ditched the case. then modify a wireless xbox controlerr reciever by soldering on a usb plug and simply plug it in. then controll the bot via the serial port.
when i softmodded my xbox i hacked an old controller for action replay and windows recognised it as a usb controller and i can use it on some computer games _________________ WHEN YOU GO TO COURT YOU'RE TRUSTING YOUR FATE TO TWELVE PEOPLE

Thats how we ran our bot for a fair while.
we used maxstream radio modules for the radio link.
we just used a laptop for the computer.
there is no need to get rid of the case or anything like that. _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets
do u think it would be easy to have the computer trip relays?

There are I/O cards you can get from jaycar for a few $ that you could plug relays etc into. _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets
