The Official RoboWars.org Linux Thread

Okay, fancy title for a thread where I ask dumb questions and Jake, Jeff and Brett laugh, and tell me the answers Laughing

Okay. Just fixed my busted Samba package, because it was stopping me from updating some other schtuff. An update was done (I think it was to do with the linux-generic core update?) and now my VM Ware has stopped working Confused I go to open VM Ware and it just closes itself.. Mad

Help Smile Plzkthnkz

there was a kernel update yesterday, sounds like VMware haven't pushed their new kernel module to you yet.
Probably easiest to download latest version from them and install again.
(I think just running the ./install.py script again will probably do the job in the mean time)

I was just trying the installation again. Currently faced with something that doesn't normally happen. It was looking for a vmmon, but couldn't find one and said there wasn't a suitable GCC compiler installed, so I'm just installing the latest GCC 4.0 into Ubuntu and that might solve the problem.

code:
Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Workstation is suitable for your
running kernel.  Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes]

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]

I know nothing of these C header files... Confused

apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`
your computer is now set for building stuff

If you are using the generic kernel then use
apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-generic

that should keep you set in future
Generally vmware has their modules updated pretty quick though, are you using the "authentic" ubuntu mirror as well as a local one (i use optus ~150kb/s)

If it's still being stupid, the path to include can be found in /lib/modules/<<module release number>>/build/include

http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/dapper/Release.gpg works fine, therefore its your internet thats got problems . . . I dont use apt so I dont really know, but is the 1.0.0.0 part supposed to be the IP address those names are resolving to ? If thats the case, your DNS is screwed somehow, try changing DNS servers.

To use your windows programs in Ubuntu, you'll need WINE. Games... Well, if you have windows games that are also Linux compatible, you should be good, otherwise it's off to play with Cedega.
