Robowars is coming back to Sydney in 2015 with a new event style. Robot teams will compete in three types of events: hungry hungry robots; robot soccer; and robot combat. This fun event will be hosted in early 2015 and puts a more fun spin on the weekend than our typical combat events. In an style which brings many memories back from the 2005 annihilator event there is sure to be chaos as the teams battle it out for robot supremacy.

Sunday 11am - 12 Midday: Venue open to public
Sunday 12 Midday - 5pm: Competition

Registration:
Registration for the event will close 2 weeks prior to the competition date. A minimum of 12 participants are required to run the event. If this threshold is not met a lower threshold of 8 robots will be considered. If the threshold of 8 robots is not met the event will be cancelled as a there is insufficient participation to ensure an adequate show can be delivered to the public.
If the total number of robots is between 8 - 12 there is scope to run the event although several factors need to be carefully considered by the event organisers. A decision will be made the day following registration closure as to the running of the event. If we receive the minimum number of entries all entrants will be notified that this threshold has been met.
Registration requires a photo of the robot. A description of the robot and a nominated primary driver. Entry fees are still TBD.
Teams:
You may enter as a single competitor or as a team of two robots. Each robot will be scored individually. If you enter as a single competitor you will be allocated an additional team member prior to the competition.
Only one robot may be entered per primary driver, you may not drive both robots on your team or on two teams. A builder can be named as a secondary driver on a second robot and operate it during the competition however the primary driver must also be present at all times during the competition hours.
Break Times:
No designated break times will be allocated for the competition. Water and some basic snack food will be supplied throughout the event however we would encourage all builders to have an early lunch in the unallocated time period between 11am-12pm or bring food which can be eaten during breaks. Builders are required to remain onsite for the duration of the competition. If you cannot be located you will immediately forfeit your next match.
Round Schedule:
The round schedule will be posted at the beginning of each day. All efforts will be made to adhere to this schedule though no guarantees are made. The goal is to ensure a maximum of 5min of arena downtime between each competition. This is to allow the maximum number of bouts to be allocated during the 5hr window and also to ensure a constant crowd entertainment. The schedule will be constructed to ensure that robots are given a minimum of 30min between rounds to allow for charging and repairs.
All robots will compete in at least one event of each type. Robots on the same team will also not fight each other in single combat events. Efforts to ensure all teams fight all each other will be made but this may not be possible.
Arena:
The arena for the event is to be a minimum of 3.5m x 3.5m square. This will be modified for each of the events. See below:
1v1 Combat Rules
The 1v1 Combat will be as above however the following extensions have been made to the rule set:
- The robots will use the 1 unstick rule where each robot has one usable unstick regardless of how they became stuck. After this a robot will be considered immobilised. This doesn't apply where a judge has called for robots to be separated.
- No IC engines are allowed due to the indoors nature of the venue
- Flame weapons may be allowed but do not fulfil the requirement for an active weapon and will require prior approval for the event.
- Stock saw blades will be allowed below 25cm without rpm restrictions. Please notify the organisers of your robot prior to the event.
Tag Team Combat Rules
- The two robots will start in the teams isolation area which will be a designated area in the arena.
- Only one robot may be operated at any one time. This will be controlled by a marshal who will receive and hand over the controllers for robots.
- This handover will occur by the current driver entering its teams isolation zone. Then placing down their controller. Once they have released control of their robot the controller will then be passed to the alternate driver.
- You may not enter the opposing teams isolation zone. Entering this zone intentionally or damaging a robot in this zone will result in forfeit.
- A robot stuck or immobilised does not receive any unsticks.
- A KO of a single robot does not end the round. If one of the robots is counted out the control may be switched to the alternate driver.
- If the alternate drive can restore a KO'd or stuck robot this robot may return to the isolation area.
- Both robots must fight for a minimum of 30seconds during the round.
- The round will last for 5 minutes. If no winner has been determined by this 5 minute mark all robots will be allowed to fight simultaneously for a following 2 minutes.
- If no winner has been determined by the end of this time the fight will go to a judges decision.
Hungry Hungry Robot Rules:
- A total of 30 tennis balls will be added to the arena the objective is to move as many of those tennis balls to your teams.
- 10 balls will be added at the start time. 10 @ 1min and 10 @ 2min.
- The round will once all balls have been removed from the arena.
- Each robot will have its own area to deposit the balls this will consist of a section with holes which the balls may fall through.
- There will be no unstick for robots if they become stuck on the arena or in their holes. Due to this robots are encouraged to have sufficiently large wheels to escape these holes.
- While robots are not barred from using weapons in this event weapons which will damage or destroy the balls should be used sparingly. And while competing for balls can get heated the main aim should not be to damage your opponent.
Soccer Rules:
- Robots will operate in teams of two.
- The ball will be placed in the center of the arena at the start of the match. Both competitors will start at opposing ends of the arena.
- The time will be paused and the ball reset after each goal.
- A goal can be scored by pushing the ball into the goal drop out zone of the opposing team.
- The match will run for 5 minutes.
- If the match is a draw at the completion of 5 minutes, play will continue for an additional 1 minute or until one teams scores a goal. If at the end of this minute both teams have not scored each team will be awarded 1/2 the winning score + points for each goal.
Scoring:
Each robot will be awarded:
50 Points for each single combat win
50 Points for each tag team win
3 Points for each ball they collect in hungry hungry robots
30 Points for each soccer win + 10 for each goal their team has scored in soccer. (Both teams will get points for goals scored)
Finals:
The top two teams will go through to the finals along with the next two highest scoring individual robots.
The two teams will fight off in a tag team round the winning team goes through to the semi finals. The losing teams fights off against the two individuals for a place in the semis. The semis and then finals are both single elimination combat rounds. _________________ Steven Martin

Interesting format, but I don't really have time to build a Sportsman. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

It is how I am gauging how many people are actually interested. If I don't get enough I won't even bother working on a date. _________________ Steven Martin

Maybe, I would prefer to keep active weapons as it more interesting. But will think about it. May allow stuff like that but would definitely be no wedges. As might as well do full combat then.
Well two issues one is trying to motivate more interesting robots. And spinners make it very hard to run for a full day. This is also to stimulate robots for potential sportsman side comp at nationals.
At this rate I am tossing up if it's even worth while. As numbers aren't looking great.
I could perhaps make something for the novelty events but it'd be MDF and not really a sportsman class bot lol _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets
MDF is fine. As for sportsman there is really only three things different, no high KE spinners, no wedges which aren't part of like weapon and must have an active weapon.
Just bolt a drill lifter to something MDF. (Or ply would probably be stronger)
Will let you guys know the outcome of this as things progress. Regardless will probably end up doing this event will just be slightly later. Odds are date will be sometime before end of June.
